YouTube attracts the world's best grade-A jerks...I'm sure of it. I don't even read comments anymore.

Sites suck after they get big because most morons don't have enough original thought to go to the unpopular sites. Kind of a security-through-obscurity thing.

Some of the comments on YouTube are hilarious, really witty, but most are so incredibly stupid that I'm surprised these people have enough mental faculties to actually operate a keyboard.

I can't work out if the internet on the whole is a painfully accurate mirror of the real world, or one of those wibbly wobbly distorted mirrors that you get at funfairs. I would hope it's the latter, otherwise we are really screwed.

The difference is that, in your everyday life, you don't regularly associate with obnoxious 13-year-olds whose parents need to learn how to discipline.

How exactly do you get featured on youtube? I've seen featured vids with 15,000,000 views, and then this with 80,000. Is it based off of views, rating, what?
24" iMac 2.16GHz c2d ~ 3G ram ~ 250G ~ Superdrive ~ Pure Sexiness
15" Powerbook G4 ~ 1.5GHz ~ 1.5G ram ~ 160G ~ Combo

You can actually suggest videos to be featured. Which is how my fiancé got featured in the first place. This time however they seem to have chosen this new clip on their own.

YouTube has editors, and now even guest editors chosen among their community.

How do videos get featured?

YouTube's members rate videos they like, and we review highly-rated and recent videos for consideration in the "Featured Videos" section of the home page and the featured videos on the "Categories" page. In addition, our programming team takes suggestions from members at editor@youtube.com and scans the site for videos of interest.

Take a look at the political lounge on this forum as an example.

The structure has changed over the years, and is certainly not representative of the world at large, nor even the population of this forum's users. The louder the idiots get (and yes, I consider myself among the guilty as charged on occasion), the more the moderates or normal-spoken people just stop bothering and/or leave.

The internet is WAY bigger than the YouTube comments section. Thankfully.

I know. I myself once started a thread on this subject (some of my devotees will have it on file) after reading some of the most appalling, hateful slander I have ever encountered on the internet (or anywhere, for that matter).

My theory is: YouTube attracts illiterates because you don't have to be able to read to watch a video.

But you know you can delete comments or disable comments altogether, right?

That's 100% accurate. I don't go to the PL much at all anymore because 1) the loud mouths are way too loud (and stupid most of the time) for my tastes, 2) it doesn't matter if you actually post something factual, most threads aren't about facts, just argument for the sake of argument, and 3) the politics of most people in the PL are SO POLAR as to make any rational discourse, to me anyway, impossible. Analogika's "loudness" is tame in comparison to the slavering, irrational, politically prurient gibberish that fills the PL. At least analogika has a point of view, rather than just an argument to counter someone else's.

Indeed. Except that this video was posted by the record label on their account instead of the official Operator Please YouTube which we moderate.

The last time they were featured it was a secretary's full job to sit and moderate You Tube-comments, and still I had to chip in. (For the record, regular negative comments don't get deleted, only spam and particularly hateful personal attacks).

That's exactly what happens. Any post that should be the last word on a subject goes completely unnoticed so that the ideologues can keep arguing their non issue for several pages.

It's not my favourite of theirs, but it's the one with the most poppy hit-potential and the song they got discovered with. And it does bring the crowd into a frenzy when played live so

I'm impressed that the YouTube feature actually translated into some US iTunes sales too. Good stuff

And it is indeed a song about ping-pong.

Yes. Funny how that seems lost upon some people who seems to think that all music should be deadly serious.

"A Song About the Existential Meaninglessness of Life" wouldn't be nearly as catchy.

Do any of them play ping pong actually?

Anyways, I'd have to agree with some of the YouTubers that the video is not particularly interesting (kids in bright coloured clothes running up and down stairs), but nonetheless the tune is pretty good for pop music.

I had a listen to some of the other songs on iTunes (in the US, unavail. in Canada), and they didn't impress me as much, and I'm not one that focuses on pop either.

Yeah. The video itself had much more potential with the concept and the set. Seems like somewhere in the process the idea was cut severely down. It was described as having a distinctly more Labyrinth/Escher feel. Instead it seems they copped out a bit with the plain colors and the shitty matte.

Check out the link here to David Pogue's review of the iPhone.
The iPhone Challenge: Keep It Quiet | New York Times Video

In it he talks about watching YouTube videos and his demo show about 2 seconds of the Ping Pong video.

Your girlfriend's band is now officially Apple-famous, not just YouTube-famous.

NOTE: The video took about five tries to load--their site must be getting hammered.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.

Damn. I made the mistake of pausing it once it had loaded. No dice getting it to play again. Grrr.

Heh. I I was just wondering if this video had made the "golden 10 000" for the iPhone launch. Guess that settles it then

I noticed that. I was about to start a new thread, until I saw this one was bumped.

I'm seriously wondering if Pogue found the video here, b/c what are the odds that he randomly found it on YouTube?

Think this forum is bad, try listening to hundreds of board and disgruntled English teachers in Japan complain how they have nothing to do all day.

Well, it was a recent feature. And only the 10 000 most popular videos got transcoded to H.264 for TV and the iPhone launch.
