Apple Teases Microsoft with Leopard Easter Egg

"If this picture is real (and we have no reason to think otherwise) then it looks like Apple has taken a little dig at Microsoft. Posted by Guillaume Carbonneau, the screenshot is taken on a developer friend's Mac, running the beta build of OS X 10.5 Leopard. Look closely to see what happens when the Finder fails to connect to a Windows share: Blue Screen of Death. Ho ho, Apple. I hope this makes it into the final release, but somehow I doubt it."

Am I the only one that finds this kind of stuff incredibly childish? Doesn't Apple realize that when they take digs at MS, it only shows they have a major chip on their shoulder?

It's a little dig... and most likely won't make it in the final release.

Jeez, let the programmers have some damn fun. Who cares if they poke fun at their main competitor? Its harmless. Childish? Maybe, but so what? We should all act like children from time to time. If MS gets their feelings hurt, I say tough titties.

I miss the easter eggs in System 7. My two favorites were Brickout in Stickies, and the Pirate Flag in the About this Mac (a picture of the Apple campus with a Pirate flag flying, you'd click on the picture and it'd change the wind dirrection.)

I think they're getting revenge for Microsoft stealing rubber ducky.

Actually, that icon is shown for Windows shares on the Network, regardless of whether the connection has failed or not.

Nah, there are lots of people who need to lighten up. I can't imagine why somebody would actually prefer that companies have that bland, stifling sterility that's usually associated with corporate America. A little fun in your products never hurt anybody.

Sounds like a good icon to use in any case. Is that a Win2K/NT4 BSD? All of the ones I've seen with XP have been register dumps, not the classic that shows up in that icon.

It's a joke -- lighten up.

The Zune guys had the iPod dump box. That was funny as well. If you can't have a little fun, what is the point?

You'll have to excuse me... it must be my age showing through. I've always been of the mind that one respects their competition, not hold them in contempt.

Do ya think that when the Apple programmers and the Microsoft programmers run into each other in the alley, they bust out the West Side Story action, snappin at each other and glaring and all that, suddenly bursting into song and dance?

That would be funny.

I wonder how the Mac community would react if the Windows icon for a Mac share was a beach ball?

Oh, come on. Companies have been slamming each other much more viciously than this for hundreds of years.

Yes... I realize I'm in the minority with my sentiments. But honestly, what purpose does it serve aside from a few giggles from the fanboys?

Gee, you must have fainted when the "start your photocopiers" posters were revealed. Not to mention any of the recent ad campaigns.

Hmm, that's a Windows 95/98 BSOD. Older, yes, but those were the operating systems which showed that lovely shade of blue when you looked at them funny.

Also, I lawled too. It's as harmless as the old Internet Explorer about:mozilla trick (type "about:mozilla" in the address bar of an old copy of IE, and the browser simulates a BSOD).

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

I was thinking "Bad" from Michael Jackson.

I liked during the keynote the Windows computer Steve connected to was called Attic. He even said something along the lines of "If you have an old Windows box up in the attic you can even network to that."

It's the 9x BSOD.
You're correct, the XP one is also blue but have a lot of white writing on it. This one we used to see with NT4. I can't remember if 2000's one is similar to the 98 type one, the same one as in the the icon.
