"At Dell we build your computer for you, specifically for you."

That is their voice over for their current commercial.

The voice is a young American (or Canadian) woman who speaks perfect English. She's friendly, courteous, and you can hear her voice perfectly.

Anyone here have that experience? Not me. If I've ever had to call Dell (or HP for that matter) I get put through to India where I cannot understand a word they're saying - and that is IF I can actually hear them speaking without crackling sounds on the line. Furthermore, I don't think they give a rat's ass about me or my purchase.

Ridiculous commercial.

I have NEVER been put through to India (or Pakistan or wherever) when I called Dell with a tech problem. On the other hand, my two problems have been 1) they forgot to include the modular CD drive in a laptop I ordered and 2) the wireless card (more of a stamp than a card!) in my son's laptop failed the day we got the thing. In the first case it was a corporate purchase, and I called the orders number-they sent out the drive that day and I got it two days later. In the second, the nice person (in either Round Rock or Nashville) walked me through enough of their troubleshooting steps to see that my brain was actually functioning on this issue, and sent out a new card with a return mailer for the bad card. No biggie.

I've used Dells for a long time. No problems, and no issues with their tech support policies, either.

I've had a Dell laptop and a Dell workstation. Had a small hardware issue with the laptop and onsite service came and fixed it, no problem. With the workstation, I only had to use support once to ask about a RAM issue, and the guy was from the US and very friendly. That was business support, though.

We have recently had an entire crop of Dell machines bite the dust in my office. Apparently, its a known issue with the particular model that my company bought in bulk a little over 3 years ago so lots of our hardware has been dropping like flies over the last 6 months or so (prompting me to religiously back up my outlook.pst file with 3yrs of emails about once per week now).

Anyway, Dell tech support has been fine and the people I spoke to were definitely not in India ... the southern drawls (not a criticism, I'm southern) were so thick I just had to ask the lady I spoke to where she was physically located .... some small town in Northern Alabama if I remember correctly. I think Dell has migrated a good chunk of its tech support back from India to cheap labor markets in the US to balance the whole cost vs. customer service equation.

Well, maybe by now the U.S. has come full circle: We're outsourcing to ourselves because the labor is so cheap due to the weak dollar.
