I'd be curious how much that runs the company.

$12M? Peanuts to Apple
Probably paid for itself in the PR this'll get (and the fact that a few thousand Apple Employees will be running around with them!)

Well, I wonder if they're also giving them away so their employees will show friends who will then want one.

$12 million is retail value. It cost Apple a lot less to give those away.
But damn what a nice gesture! I would imagine this will help keep people at Apple as well. I can only imagine that a project like the iPhone would drive a lot of employees to the breaking point.
So who wants to drive over to Cupertino real quick and wait outside campus for the employees to leave for the day? I'll bring the baseball bats, you bring the masks.

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think this was really a PR move at all. Apple couldn't expect to any more press than this device is already getting, and while $12 million might not be much to Apple, pulling 17,000 iPhones out of the distribution chain at launch is.
Sometimes I think Steve just really enjoys what he does.

In the article it said that people would get their iPhones by the end of July. I'm sure all of the iPhones are going to be in stores soon and factories are cranking them out right now.

Imagine how gutted you'd be right now if you'd been working for Apple for 364 days.

A former student of my wife's was hired by Apple, and I believe her starting date was July 1, 2006. Wonder if she made the cut-off.

You have to draw the line somewhere I guess, although pleading to a manager/writing a letter to Steve would seem like a smart move if she missed out?!

Maybe, but I'd be quite surprised if he's doing it just out of the goodness of his heart.
While it may not be a big PR win for the media, it's definitely a PR win for the employees. Happy employees make for a strong company.
BTW, Apple is NOT pulling 17000 iPhones out of the distribution chain at launch. The phones won't come until later, when initial demand subsides.

You think that giving a $500 bonus (which didn't cost the company that much, and that will require an investment of more than $500 just to use for a year) to someone working multiple hours a night overtime for a year (or more) is something that would keep someone working there? Not likely.
That's kind of like the place I work giving us a pizza dinner at the end of a huge project. Let's see, months of overtime being compensated by $100 spent on pizza by the company. Company == Wins.

Haha, I can't imagine them doing it that way. I bet when they've worked there for a year, they get one. If they started 11 months ago, they get one in a month. If they started last week, they have to wait 51 weeks.

Highly doubtful. Having once worked for Apple, these deals are usually one time only. Sometimes you catch a break, and sometimes you don't. During the Thanksgiving week of 2003, I had to work that week, although Apple was shut down. Steve saw to it that we got 20GB iPods, for working while everybody else was off, which was a nice gesture. Of course, it also helped me sell more iPods, as I always had mine with me.
