This will be the vaguest description ever, but I swore this game was for Sega Genesis (very small chance it was NES). You were some kind of a knight and you ended up fighting the elements as bosses, like I remember fighting the wind element and it was a cloud. Right at or right before the end boss you're at the summit of a mountain and I vaguely remember having to fight or dodge all the element bosses from before.

I think you're remembering the NES game Ironsword unless there was a total knockoff for the Genesis.
