"Most users ever online was 6,340, Jun 20, 2004 at 06:51 AM".... What was this date and why was everyone up so damn early? I've been wondering this for a while.

I wonder how many active users there have been in the past, compared to now.

I thought that, too, but it was a Sunday. WWDC 2004 was on June 28th and Tiger was announced.

I'm sure we've had more users than that on at once - or at least trying to get on. It's just that when something major happens the site slows to a crawl due to all of the hits and incessant reloading, so fewer people can get on. Maybe that was just a popular but relatively calm day, or maybe teh hampstor got the details wrong.
