Seriously, how loud do you have your iPod? Loud enough to put your life in danger? Not just damage your hearing, but risk your life?

Woman has legs severed by train while jogging and listening to iPod.

Too bad.

In a quiet office setting, I barely raise mine 1/16 of an inch over silent. If it really loud (printers and people talking), I may turn it up to an entire inch (about the width of the album cover art).

I like my hearing.

^ Agreed. Mine's perhaps a quarter spin of the wheel up from the bottom, the louder you listen to your music the quieter it will get. (A good pair of phones is a must though, otherwise I'd probably have it slightly louder.)

I have worked industrial sound systems for years, and I have yet to find ANYTHING that can match the volume of a freight train. I set up a system on an Air Force base flightline and flat out it could not touch the sound level of a jet 100 yards away. A train right next to you is so loud you can FEEL it. This is just bizarre.

Yes, yes, I know. Finding headphones I like is a pain (and expensive).

Hehehe, the last pair I enjoyed were the ones that came with the original GameBoy (also quality, I'm sure).

I'm always perplexed by cases like this. Even without any hearing at all, unless she was crawling across the tracks, how could she not see or feel that there was a train just a few yards away? I always find them both very noticeable and they make the ground and air shake when they're nearby! I mean, we're not talking about some 360 mph bullet train that can suddenly be right on top of you.

Anyway, I have to turn my iPod up much louder than I'd like thanks to those damn noisy kids!

Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your iPod. Where can you go from there? Where?

Mine is between 1/4 and 1/2 of the way up usually. I tend to use it in noisy places, tho.

My thoughts exactly. How is this even possible ? Did she go running blindfolded ?

I used to go to school on my bicycle every day with my ipod (or minidisc back then) in my ears. And NEVER even came close to having an accident. It's really not that hard to use your damn eyes. And there's no music player that can go louder than cars, trains etc. Even with the in-ear headphones I've been using for years. You can always hear something. Unless your hearing is really crap maybe.
IMHO most people that are involved in accidents when having headphones in their ears would have had that same accident without them. It's just the sort of people that doesn't think when they're walking or running or cycling down the street. They go straight on without looking.

My ipod is quiet. There is actually too much distortion on low piano bass too.
