i am getting my dell exchanged for an ibook. some guy at work wants a dell for what reason i dont know and i have always wanted an i book. i need some thoughts here.... a bit apprehensive as my dell (2004 i9100)is under warranty (trust me you need it .. the darn thing has been to the depot like 10 times) however his ibook is not covered by any but he says its working like a charm. its the last g4 rev that came out .. what do you guys think ... are they generally reliable.. is this exchange worth it ..i am not much of a gamer or anything .. just the avg net user... any inputs to look out for greatly appreciated ... anything to watch out for in that model ??.. thanks ..

First off get which model, 12 inch or 14inch? also if its the 12" would you be comfortable with such a small screen.

the last revision of iBooks f had a cpu speed of 1.33GHz (12") and 1.42GHz(14"), it was introduced in mid 2005 and discontinued in 2006.

Standard ram was 512 and the max was 1.5.

Being an ibook, and not an intel mac it will not run windows (other then virtual pc which I don't recommend).

What software do you use,and is there a osx counterpart. Is he providing the software and licenses, such as ms office? Doesn't make sense to me if you swap machines only to need to buy a ton of software.

If it were me, I'd save up my money and either by a Macbook, or an iMac, it gives you the ability to run current OSX programs and if you still need to run windows programs it can do that very efficiently

I'd sell it for $300, save some money (if you have to), and buy a MacBook.

i agree with olepigeon... save for a macbook. it will be worth it. or see if you can trade then sell it on ebay... macs usually have great resale.. i sold my 12inch powerbook g4 for a little over a grand a few months after the macbooks came out.

yepp its the 12" version of the ibook. he said he will give it to me with all the softwares loaded like office for mac. running windows is not at all a requirement for me. i have been running linux on the dell notebook since i had it, so am pretty used to not using windows. however i think i can see where you guys are going with the macbook thing. thing is i am kinda agreeing with Macintommy. wont it be better to get the exchange and then prolly think of selling it .. it should get way more money than selling the dell. that much easier to get a macbook?

I'd say go for it. There's a chance of having some problems or something. The white iBooks in general were more prone to logic board failures than most of Apple's computers. But you should hopefully be fine if it's this late in the game without problems. Though I would have him sign off on giving you back your Dull if there were problems within the first thirty days.

lol @ Dull
yeah i think that would make sense. if the dell crashes he get it repaired with warranty. meanwhile i can prolly sell the ibook and be that much closer to getting the macbook
