Apparently Apple recently bought the iPhone.com domain from a guy named Michael Kovatch. He wouldn't state how much it was, except that it was in the millions.

Good for him, though. He bought the domain back in 1995 and was using it for his cell phone company. This was before the iMac and the whole "i-" anything craze. So he wasn't some cyber-squater looking to gouge Apple.

I'm glad to hear it wasn't a cyber-squater trying to extort Apple. I agree, good for him!

Even if it was a cyber-squater trying to extort Apple....GOOD FOR HIM! Smart business move, if it had been the case.

I put cyber-squatters on a level somewhere between child molesters and mafia hitmen.

I saw this when it hit the front page of Digg a week or so ago. Something similar happened with eBills.com: Your Source on the Net - Bill years ago, IIRC. A guy had the site and his name was something like Edward Bills, the company that owns it now gave him a few million for it.

I wish something like this would happen to me.

Now, all I need is someone at Apple to decide the Next Big Thing is fuzzy wombats, and I'm all set!

iPhone.com belonged to some tech company. I remember seeing some sort of networking product on there. For the life of me I can't remember what it was now.

No it was something else. Cisco was only one of several companies using iPhone as a name. The iPhone.com domain wasn't owned by Cisco at all. It was being used to sell some sort of router or VOIP product. It was cheap and tacky looking.
