Well I don't think they could. You don't invade a country like Sweden. You walk in with an army and "convince" the authorities to give over power.

Ya, and knowing the Swedish, they'll kick their factories into high gear in order to build war machinery for the Germans to try and invade Norway.

Victoria Silverstedwhatever.

Don't ask how or why but Swedish girls fall apart after 30. Everything about them falls to pieces. So yes, German girls should invade them and teach them how to maintain their genes. Then the Brits should invade German Sweden to teach them irony and humour.

Nah, the Germans and the Brits should team up and invade the USofA in order to teach them how to make beer.

English beer :hmmm: It's like British cars, I guess.
German beer is like German cars: perfection.

The reason is simple:
A friend of mine who works at the University of Warwick asked a local while gardening how he manages to have such a perfect lawn. His answer was: `We've been doing this for 800 years, it's part of our culture.'

"avg." is what's called an "abbreviation" and is used to signify the word "average".

I know it's weird, but just act like he wrote "average" instead of "avg.", and try reading his post again.

No, he used 'avg' in reference to good American beer, not bad British beer. My point still remains.

Imagine drinking a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Now imagine how delicious and refreshing that bottle of rubbing alcohol would be after Old Speckled Hen.

There are reasonable British beers, drinkable ones, yes. And it's true that the average British beer is certainly better than the average American beer. But … that doesn't change what I've said.

Kinda pointless since so many Americans are of British or German descent. Add Irish there too and it makes me wonder why Americans don't have a palette for bitter and cider.

There are many excellent British beers. A bitter, an ale or an IPA might not appeal to your taste but they're still god beers. Given the choice I'd go for British beer over German beer any day. British beer is far more interesting, from coffee like porters to malty Ales to hoppy IPAs. German beer, by and large, is German beer. Well made but apart from Weisse, Koelsch, Alt and Pilsener there is little in the way of variety.

Fixinated.

Reminds me of

Heh

I knew I'd get into trouble with that statement, and probably rightly so. The point I was trying to make is that few people outside the UK know just how varied UK beers are - and your examples above notwithstanding I still believe that there is far more variety in UK brewing than in German brewing.

The same is true for the US and Canada by the way. There are brilliant micro and craft breweries out here, producing beer that's on par with the best that Europe has to offer. The problem is that most people think Coors Light when they think North America and beer.

And since you get Helles if you order beer in Bavaria this is especially a shame!
The variety in this sort of beer alone is enormous (and completely unknown to Northgermans )!

Mix drinks don't qualify.

That's like talking about Gordon's vs. Finsbury vs. Bombay Sapphire, and you coming along saying that "gin tonic is a great kind, as well".

So true. I am a Northgerman and I absolutely despise beer of any kind. In fact, I despise alcohol. Well, except for a great cocktail once a year or Baileys.

There is two different types of beer drinking. There is having a beer with your greasy food on occasion. Then there is the bong hit swill beer.

Those that like to do the latter tend to like the least tasteful and "light" piss water you can buy for such consumption. True beer isn't really meant to be consumed in such a way.

But you have it dead on about micro-brews.

I drink maybe 2-3 times a year. And even then it's just 1-2 beers.

Always imports, or micros

Another myth.

I've tried it. And while I did not put enormous effort into it, the time and money I had to put into it did't make it more cost efficient, nor better tasting. I might as well buy my favorite import beer.

Little in the way of variety?
You just haven't tried more of them: almost half of all breweries within Europe are located in Germany and the majority of them is smaller -- which means that there is a phletora of varieties and brands. From the beer list it's immediately clear that you haven't been further South than the Rhineland …

Helles, Weißbier, Kristallweizen, dunkles Weißbier, (Mai-)Bock, Oktoberfest beer (yes, the Oktoberfest got its own kind of beer), just to name a few Hmmm …

I do enjoy the beer in California, they have tons of micro breweries here and lots of imports. I can get my favorite Japanese beers (Asahi super dry, Sapporo) and lots of local ones. However, the Japanese copied beer making from the Germans … and they are damn good at copying
