I've always thought guys were dog people and gals were cat people. But it seems otherwise, Let's Poll!

I like cats and dogs. I currently have two cats. We had to put our 11 yo St. Bernard down earlier this year due to cancer, and the idea of getting another dog is far off on the horizon.

Thanks.
I don't think a user can edit a poll, but I believe a mod can. Perhaps make it public as well?

Liking cats and dogs. Currently we live most of the week in the city and only weekends in the country, so keeping a dog wouldn't be fair to the animal. When we manage to move out full time we'll be having cats and dogs.

Male, don't like cats, but I really like dogs.
We live in an apartment and I do not have time with work for a dog. I'd feel terrible with it all day long sitting at home alone. My wife has a cat.

Male/Dog
I recently read in the paper of a little chihuahua who threw herself between a rattlesnake and a toddler in her owner's backyard. I'm not sure if a cat would have done that...
A while back, I remember reading a story (I think I may have even gotten the link here, not sure) about a dog who saved its owner from a house fire which was presumed to have been started by another pet (a cat). Sadly, both pets died when the dog went back in to rescue the cat and was unsuccessful.
While I would argue that dogs are smarter than cats, the whole "what defines intelligence versus instinct" argument I'd rather not get into. However, I don't think anyone can deny that dogs are more inclined to use whatever intelligence and instinct they have to help others, while cats seem to be concerned more or less solely with themselves.

I think most computer nerds love cat. Cats are so cute. Since I already own so many mouse(s), might as well get a cat. Love those cute pussies.

Back in Memphis, when I was young, we used to leave the front door open all the time in the summer. One day, some strange pitbull strolls through the door and starts walking up to us. In hindsight, it probably just wanted to be friendly, but at the time I was fairly scared. So my cat runs up, takes a flying leap onto the pitbull's back and sends the dog screaming out the door. That was pretty darn impressive to me.

Sounds like a pretty convincing argument that cats are more intelligent (or at least have brains more like our own).

Dogs are ok, but I don't love them. Unfortunately, puppies are adorable and the family wants one. Then it will grow on me.
After my first cat passed on (17 years) I really missed having a cat.

male - have a cat but i wouldn't say i love cats = dogs are cool but dogs get so huge and if i ever got a dog i'd want a big dog - and then i wouldn't want to pick up its crap - so i'll stick with cats
i saw a chocolate lab the other day - cute little pup - then i remembered my buddy has a chocolate lab that is all grown up and HUGE - i'd rather have a cat running around my house then a huge dog - and no i wouldnt stick him outside in a kennel all day

That's nice, but it seems to be the exception and not the rule.

If by "brains more like our own," you are referring to self-centeredness, than by all means, I agree. However, neither OP nor I have addressed intelligence (if you re-read my post, you will find that I specifically avoid the intelligence argument, instead pointing out the greater capacity and willingness of dogs to serve others, which is the primary reason why I like dogs better).

I have a dog and a cat and both can manage on their own. The dog at least does it where I want her to - the cat does it in my vegetables.

I've always appreciated a cat's independence and attitude. My wife has a dog (he pre-dates me ) and he's big ol' baby and is nice to have around, but I guess when it comes to pets, I want more of a companion than a dependent

Amen!!!
Having a dog is like having a child, and at the moment, I want neither. (Not to mention I was bit by a dog when I was younger and find I'm afraid of most dogs, to an extent).
I love my cats, they can do their own thing, or snuggle up if they feel inclined, but they don't contstantly need your attention.

I can go a few days and not even notice that the cat is in the house. I don't get the point. Cats seem to be for people that only want a pet every once in a while.

you have a rather aloof cat then. i'm pretty sure that if i didn't pay my cat attention when i got home from work, he'd cry for a few hours, become depressed, and then smother me in my sleep.

My wife is home all day. Perhaps since the cat isn't alone all day, she doesn't care when I show up.
