I've been seeing this awesome girl for about 6 months. Her mom's birthday is next week, and I'd like to bring a small gift along to the party. I've met her mom maybe a half dozen times, so I don't have good gauge of what exactly she'd personally want. What are good standard gifts for acquaintances? Any ideas what would be nice and useful, but not too personal or strange?

I was thinking a small box of nice stationary, but any other ideas would be appreciated.

Candle.

Either that or a picture of you engaged in coitus with her daughter while giving a thumbs up.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I'd go with the second option. Can't go wrong.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Man, you guys read my mind... it was either that or a gift card to the strip club.

After only 6 months dating, I wouldn't say you'd be obligated to give a personal gift. It's even questionable if your girlfriend would put your name with hers on her gift. Why not ask your girlfriend???

six months?

get flowers
just keep in mind that you can't get cheap supermarket flowers. Spend around $40-60
you don't know this lady very well so don't try and be original. be appropriate

Ask a buncha guys and those are the answers you get. (Except andi)

I understand 6 mos and you are starting to bond with the family and want to get a gift.

But how old are you? What kinda money do u want to spend? Definitely under $50!

I agree with flowers. But I'm not into them myself. I got a plant (dish garden) instead once and I still have it 3 years later.
Candle is nice- Yankee Candle with a holder.
Maybe a book?

I don't know the woman but those are generic ideas.

A nice potted plant isn't a bad idea. I'm 25, and I'd probably spend $20 or so. I could afford to spend more, but I'm just thinking something small would be fine.

They are inviting you into their home and are going to feed you more than $20 worth of food.
You're an adult now its time to present yourself as such.

If you see any future with this girl don't make yourself look like a chump to her MOM. Don't kiss her ass or course but make a proper gesture. Unless you don't have a job, in which case don't worry about how you'll look at the party, you should spend more on someone that important to your GF.

edit: furthermore a "nice" potted plant seems to cost way more than twenty bucks

i think a nice bouqet of flowers (doesn't have to be uber expensive) and a bottle of champagne/wine will be most appropriate. What you may also want to do (if you're REALLY into the girl..like REALLY into her, and see this going in the ''serious'' direction), is take her and the mom out for a birthday lunch. Your treat.

I second the suggestion: flowers and wine (unless you know for a fact that she doesn't drink a drop). It's not expected of you to be original, you show both you and your girlfriend that you have manners. Leaving a good impression/trying to leave a good impression will be appreciated by both her mother and your girl. I'm sure you'll be repaid in kind

Nice flowers and chocolate.. you can't go wrong with that. Especially if it's a first.
BTW, a nice potted plant should run about around 50-75. Anything more would be excessive and trying too hard.
