My God Son, 45, had a quick confrontation with a big black bear, behind his home, in Ocala, Florida.
The other night ‘Phip’ heard what he thought was a cat clambering around in the trash cans, out back of his house. The entire backyard is completely enclosed with a 6’ wooden fence.
Phil walked into the backyard, in his PJ’s, with only a flashlight and the determination to quickly run off some old tomcat!
When he got to the cans the “biggest black bear I’ve EVER seen” stood up and looked him square in the eyes!
One of them hollered like stuck pig and the other one let out a ferocious growl.
Phil rocketed back to the house and the bear streaked in the opposite direction, across the yard and blasted through the back fence!
The next morning was Phil able to manage a shaky laugh - according to Barb (mom) - and to me, he said, “I wasn’t really scared, Uncle Scotty - just a little startled!”
... would have scared/startled the crap out of ME!
I certainly won’t pass up the opportunity to razz the heck out of him when I see him in a month, or so.
Hole in the fence where the blackie blasted through!
A closer shot of the new bear-exit.
Claw marks on a board - that bear was seriously underway!
Some bear hair left behind!

There have been black bears recently sighted in my area, the first time in many decades. Their population must be on the rise.

HAhaha. The bear was probably as startled as your godson was. I love bears. They're pretty amazing creatures.

Holy crap. I met a bear a couple of years ago on a trail in Muskoka*. Thankfully another blackie, so it just took off without picking a fight. I was pretty shaken for a couple of minutes.
* Forests and lakes, lakes and forests.

The biggest one is still in the Adirondacks near Sabattis, NY. That was the one that walked through our camp when I was about 12 years old. That one was huge! Shook the ground! And so black that I never really actually saw it... But is was big!
