I went to their site and entered my address in the upper right corner where it says "Check pricing and availability." I was taken to a page with 5 plans.

they're a wimax sort of company.

When they came through my area they wanted a 3 year contract.

A 3 year contract is a poor decision for internet service when there's such price and speed competition in the marketplace.

Additionally, the only modem they had was the large box modem. A smaller modem was said to have been coming.

But worst of all is, it's wireless, so you want to be able to take it with you -- but they don't have a plan that lets you have a modem at home and a smaller modem for the road, and being able to use them both at the same time. Just because I go on business doesn't mean my family at home should go without internet.

Maybe these aren't problems or concerns for you, in which case, if they have coverage where you need it, it could be good for you.

Clearwire is an interesting company. We had issues with them at work because they were blocking our AFP server. Turns out they were blocking all AFP traffic on their network... Took a while to get their tech support to understand that they should unblock AFP, and that their customers couldn't access our server. They kept asking why we were block them. Yeah. Like we have reason to block all of Clearwire.

I have a friend who's done something interesting with Clearwire though. In his car, he's got some solar panels hooked to a battery, which is providing power for a Clearwire receiver hooked to a WiFi broadcaster. It's kind of cool to sit in his car and browse the web. Tunnels do cause issues though.

Last I checked, their TOS was pretty unfriendly to anything besides basic web surfing and e-mail. Maybe it's changed since then or maybe I got the wrong impression, but when I read it it sounded like they'd boot you for doing anything that used much bandwidth, especially in the upstream direction, and that's assuming that the ports aren't blocked to begin with.

I'd have loved to have this option when I was putting a 5 machine network in a limo a year or two ago. Instead all the machines had to share a connection from an EDGE card, in addition to rebroadcasting it via WiFi in the interior of the vehicle. Slooooowwww. Clearwire is making big inroads in our market now and its pretty damn fast.

Except, two year contract...no thanks. I'll do that for a cell phone, since its at least in their best interest to continually be making the next big thing available, but not for 'Net access.
