Ok, I had the idea of playing Unreal Tournament 2004 again ... So far so good .. As the Mac version seems to be slower than the Windows version, I installed Windows on my MacBook (Dualboot using Bootcamp) - and yes, it is amazingly fast.

So .. two days I was running only UT, mIRC and MSN .. Then I run a Windowsupdate .. I heard somewhere you supposed to do that 8-)

The result : 75% CPU of the process "System" (no, not the idle one) .. system keeps freezing, IE doesn't even start and I keep sending error reports to Microsoft.

Great .. So I assumed, something from the Windowsupdate borked my system. But ey .. the good Windows has Systemrestore activated which I usually disable .. but forgot on this one .. Cool .. So I choose the day after I installed it ... Simple error : Cannot be restored with no reason whatsoever .. Its just not possible ..

Great .. So I "uninstalled" everything backwards. First mIRC, then UT and MSN .. "SYSTEM" 100% ....

So, how do I post this thread ? I booted up OS X ..

I am probably JUST one of the guys whose installation is borked for some mystery reasons .. But this is just one example why OS X is a tad better ..

I bought the laptop (first Mac ever) in October 2006 and reinstalled the system once but only to see how an installation is actually working on Mac .. Go figure ...

Technically, the thread title should read "..and people asking why I use OS X".

I had a similar experience with my Dell, Mephisto. I have concluded that anyone who uses Windows on a daily basis is a glutton for punishment. One thing though: OS X isn't just a tad better - it's tons better.

I agree, my work computer suddenly will "freeze" for about a minute or two while its doing something. This is most noticeable if keep it running for days instead of shutting it down at the end of the day.

My Macs are on for weeks/months at a time and no adverse performance hits occur.

It must be due to the gameing stuff, because I've never had a Windows machine do that to me-and I've been running everything from Windows 3.1 to XP Pro.

Not that I don't think OS X is head and shoulders above any Windows OS, but games do tend to overstress Windows, and the prettier the graphics, the worse they do.

When it hangs up running Update, do you get a "svchost.exe" crash message? If yes, there's a patch for that. Many PCs, but not all, have gotten that here at work. Do a search for that on MS.com and you'll find the patch.
