Japanese car keeps watch for drunk drivers - 06 August 2007 - New Scientist Tech

This has the potential to be a really good thing. Deaths involving drunk drivers are far too many. Hopefully, this technology can be perfected and help decrease the amount of drunk drivers on the road.

Wonderful. Technology that prevents drunk driving is a beautiful thing.

Maybe it will cut down on heavy after shave and awful perfumes as well.

Aren't there already devices in fairly common use that wire a breathalyzer to the ignition? For use in court-mandated situations & such?

Mercedes-Benz has had one in its S-Class sedan for a few years now. Who knows how effective it is.

Ya I think there are...at least in 40 Year Old Virgin that one chick had to use one. There is no way there is a car that can sense if your intoxicated that's crazy!

If it works as advertised, it's a great idea. I have no problem with drunks killing themselves in a car, but killing and maiming others needs to stop.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

This system is quite a bit different than that one. The one that courts can make you install only requires a sober person to breathe in them. The one being developed actually monitors the driver as well.
