This past week I traveled home and while I was there was offered a higher paying job and a free Bachelor's degree. I accepted and am putting my application in. Well I stayed and talked with the guys that worked there for well over an hour and some even went as far to tell one of the guys I knew up there about me and they liked me.

Tonight I get a call from that same guy who said he was talking with the boss and a guy (whom is a deputy sheriff in our county) and who I do not like and he doesn't like me said that I came up to him and started talking horrible about this deptartment and yada yada...Naturally I didnt even see him while I was there and I promise I am not going to talk bad about a place I am trying to get hired on too. The guy I knew who is a District Chief at the fire dept said he knew the guy was lying but wanted to make sure before he set the guy straight.

I was wondering what should I do in this situation? Just forget about it and let it (hopefully) die off or ask the guy why he said that. The only problem with going to him is he is 20 yrs older than me and a very arrogant and prideful person who is generally the type of my way or no way. I'm at a loss really.

Assuming your friend is capable of clearing up the confusion, I'd leave it at that. The other guy loses — no point in antagonizing him further. He doesn't sound like he wants to kiss and make up.

Call him out -- on the phone. Record the call.*

You aren't going to change this arrogant little ****, so just don't acknowledge the comment. By not bringing the statement to the light you are saying more than he has. Everyone seems to know his modus operandi, so don't sweat it. Makes him look bad, you very good. Some times the best action is inaction.
