"North Carolina fans showed their love for Mike Krzyzewski -- whose Blue Devils were in the midst of a four-game losing streak -- when the two teams faced off last March."

I hate the association between universities and big competitive sports. Shouldn't colleges and universities be using their funds to further their educational mission rather than dumping millions on stadiums, coaches, trainers, equipment.

I've noticed that the students who aren't fans of their university's athletic program tend to make poorer grades, be less social, and in general are losers, which leads me to believe that as alumni they won't have very high paying jobs and thus will contribute less money to the school, meaning less money for the school's academic endowment. Much less will they contribute anything to society.

Trust me, there are MUCH better signs during "Bedlam" (Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma)....but, they aren't for the public to view freely on SI.com unfortunately.

Stadiums, coaches, trainers, and equipment that bring in millions more. ISU has a crappy football team and they have a parking lot right next to the stadium that pulls in a $100,000 "donation" per spot.

Only six Division I athletic departments have shown a profit during the past six years, Brand said.

ESPN - Florida athletics gives $6 million to university - College Sports
Yeah, they're wasting money.

I can't stand college sports, I'm fairly antisocial but I run a pretty successful company and make more money than I should. I've also found that fans of college sports are helluva easy to prey on. Slap a uni logo on a koozie and you're an instant millionaire.

Brand cited basketball coaches specifically because the sport's Division I men's programs had the worst academic performance on the Academic Progress Rate, which measures eligibility and retention of student athletes for every program at every Division I school.
Brand said about 45 percent of Division I schools that have men's basketball teams are in danger of scoring below 925 on the APR — the equivalent of a 60 percent graduation rate under the NCAA's formula — and could receive warning letters.
Seriously, what a waste. Why don't we have Athletic Institutes where all the basketball players can go and further their basketball career. Clearly they are going to "university" to eventually become an NBA player. Why does the university have to be a part of that process to the detriment of students who are serious about learning?
