Notice how Lopez stepped away ASAP after the question?
He's either thinking he's got a beautiful-but-easy mark or he's gonna get away lightning quick from dumb as a doornail mentality.

That was great. I heard it on the radio.
P.S. I was amused a while back when one of the TV channels ran a national IQ test, and included a bunch of teams for an IQ competition. Teams were like doctors (who won the competition), fitness instructors, tattoo artists, celebrities, mayors, millionaires, etc. The celebrities came in dead last, and were the only group to score below 100.

She was obviously nervous. Also, what WOULD have been a good answer?
Because the US educational system has failed to teach basic geography?
Also, I really can't believe that 60,00,000 Americans couldn't find the US on an un-labeled map of the world. I'm not saying most americans are well versed in geography, but not being able to find their own country? I don't think I can honestly say I know anyone that couldn't find the US (unless you are counting children under the age of 4).
Does anyone have a link to the data?

Yes? Seriously though, she could have just thrown in a generic answer about parental involvement and programs to ensure proper school curricula and that sort of thing. ie. Kept it on topic.
However, what it sounds like is she had rehearsed something about conditions elsewhere in the world and couldn't quite apply it to American education.

I've seen it happen. Most of the stupid ones point to Russia, because Russia is the largest (which therefore must be the best, thus must be the US).

Talking To Americans
This show is often unfair, but hilarious nonetheless. My favourite was when he asked this 40ish year-old woman some questions, and her 10 year-old kid kept on correcting her.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. There are millions of idiots out there, but 60,000,000? I'm guessing if I went to some hole in the wall town and sampled a small number of school children I might be able to get such a number, but I just don't believe it. That's like saying everyone in the state of New York and California wouldn't be able to find the US on a map.

There are about 300 million people in the U. S. I'd bet that far more than 60 million haven't looked at a map in quite some time. We live in a very self-centered society, and many are struggling just to get by and are not even remotely concerned with where America is on a map. Considering that a lot of people consider New Mexico as being part of Mexico, we have a problem.
What this poor girl was doing, IMO, was trying to sound as if she knew more about the subject than she did, and unfortunately for her, it backfired.

These canidates are pushed to talk about helping poor countries, uneducated children etc. in order to sound like a humanitarian to win the competition. Sadly, some are so brainless, they it becomes a conditioned response to any question.

So because she has done it before she can't be nervous?
Anyway, I couldn't help but think of the Billy Madison quote:
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." - Billy Madison Quote
I'm just waiting to see someone mix the two on Youtube.

It´s more a general feeling that i don´t like that kind of artificial girls. She totally looks like made of plastic, i can´t find that attractive.
And she is somehow round-faced, looking like a chubby baby.
Well, i really would not go for a girl like her - besides the fact that she is a dressed-up 15-year-old as far as i understood...

Thats a poor answer... i dont have a map in my flat and i can tell you where america is...
i find it hard to believe that statistic, so 20% of americans have never seen a map of the world??

I think she's going to turn this into a positive for herself. This Yahoo! News piece sounds like she's basically saying "oops-I did screw that one up, but here's what I should have said." Either way, you should NEVER expect someone competing in a beauty pageant to look like a real human being; she's pinned, taped, made up, and otherwise tweaked for the freakin' pageant. It's a particular look that goes with pageants, and unfortunately, it's morphed into something that's almost required for competitors. Way back in the day, a girl could show up on stage with decent makeup and look great, but today they are supposed to be "perfect," so they have this hideous kind of makeup that does indeed make 'em look plastic. It's a shame because some of these girls (we are talking about Miss TEEN USA here) are rather pretty.
I don't doubt that the survey came back with that statistic-I just want to see the bloody survey. I'll bet it didn't just say "Here's a map; where is the United States?" And I'll also bet that it was not administered in a way that would ensure what you and I might call "representative" answers. Pushy pollsters get low numbers and their results produce stupid stats.

She's more popular and known from being a dumb ass than she is even if she won the pageant.

Heard the girl's interview on Today Show about the incident and she still sounds uneducated and stupid:
"Right when that question was asked to me."
"Personally, me and my friends know where the United States is on a map."
Follow-up interview.

I agree. This is a tough question for an 18 year old girl in front of a TV audience to answer off the cuff. Anyone could have made the same mistake. She had nothing to say, and, under the insurmountable pressure to speak, began to vocalise her mental confusion. I feel sorry for her, and I don't think it can tell us very much about her intelligence, or lack thereof.
If I had to answer the question, I wouldn't know what to say. If I were given time to think about it, I would probably answer that it has to do wtih the the fact that Americans are too self-interested: To have a clear view of North America's place in the world (culturally, politically, and yes, geographically) it is first necessary for a North American to realise that the world exists.)

Amazingly, this girl placed third-runner-up. Obviously, the "skill testing question" needs to occur before the swimsuit competition, to weed out the real dunderheads.

And if you showed a blank map without the states labeled of the US to people in Europe they would also have a hard time labeling them.
Still to this day anytime I speak in #Europe and tell them I am from WV they say "Oh you mean Virginia?"
I guess their history books are older than the civil war.
Not that there is anything wrong with that. You move to a new city and you don't know where everything is at either.
People who make a big deal out of it do so because they have an agenda.
