So I will be moving in the next week or so and I have come to a dilemma. How do I move my dog who is a outside dog and black lab with me? I have a ford explorer and will have a ford f150, with a uhaul trailer on the back. I'll be moving around 700 miles and was wondering what should I do...like when do I need to stop, do I need to put food and water in the back of my explorer?

Dude, when you want food, the dog wants food. When you want poopie, the dog wants poopie.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Consider yourself lucky. When I moved a year ago, I drove with my cat for roughly the same distance. That. Sucked. x2.

Yes, you should put some food there for him. Also some ice cubes in a bowl. There will be numerous rest stops along the way where you can take him out on a leash for a walk and bathroom breaks. 700 miles isn't far. You should be able to do it in one day, assuming it's mostly interstate miles.

Or maybe one of those car DVD players. Works for kids.

Dogs can be great travellers, mine has been to 34 of the States via car and made an international flight with no problems.

just make sure to make stops to let him walk, do his business and have a drink. He may not have much of an appetite when on the road. Get his bed or something with your scent on it for him to lie down on. It'll help him adjust to the settings.

Bring a litre of water and give him water when you stop. You'll probably need to stop a couple times since he's not used to riding. Honestly, I would keep the food minimal until the drive is over to avoid nervous messes.

Think about how often your dog "does his thing" in the yard. He'll probably need to go every few hours, and he'll need water a bit more often than that. As for food, feed him about when you would at home, but less-he'll likely sleep much of the time. And the breaks you take for him will help you too-walk him around and you'll feel better too.

So, Nashville to where? I see that your sig indicates Golden Eagles territory somewhere in your life... (I graduated from USM in '95).
