So, I'm here in Florida and we decided to buy something from a friend. He had something up at eBay, told me about it, and I wanted to buy it. Did the Buy It Now on eBay.

$1000.

I wanted to just Paypal him the money and guess what? It charged me an automatic 6.5% sales tax to send him the money.

Backed out of it and sent the payment as "Goods" instead and it didn't charge the fee, but the tax man is starting to dig deep into our pockets, folks, with the help of good ole Paypal. No notice given to me about this "change."

Anyone else?

Don't jump to conclusions just yet. Your friend may have accidentally set it up that way.

Just called and nope, he didn't.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I don't mind paying sales tax, but it certainly is out of the blue.

Can you set it up to collect sales tax?

I would call Paypal (402-935-7733) but I'm on my way out the door. I'd like to point blank ask them if this is a new thing with them.

Sounds like a glitch.

Paypal gives instructions to webdesigner how to turn iSales tax on or off.

It doesn't make sense. Paypal wouldn't be responsible for paying the sales tax to the government, as far as I know, so they shouldn't be collecting it.

Called.

You're all correct: Paypal is definitely not collecting any tax. Something occurred to me, though...my friend must have ticked off the little box in the eBay auction that mentions collecting sales tax, that's all. Had him check and sure enough, he had.
