I'm wondering if Starbucks is being retrofitted with OSX servers to provide the music and allow the phone/touch to know what is currently playing. This may explain why it is going to take so long to roll out the plan across the country.

Does this open up other possibilities for the partnership?

The better questions is: could you run OS X servers on Dunkin Donuts coffee also

But OS X isn't really a good enterprise solution! I mean we could set up servers for half the cost that have SO MANY more command line features!

I agree - I mean, WTF, OF COURSE the iPhone users should have the ability to use a CLI to leech music...

Dude, IMHO OS X Server is a shitty product for large Enterprise use. If you want to debate that, we can, but otherwise please dispense with the little petty jabs and bait. Cool?

If the machine is just going to be running an iTunes share, why not something like a Mac mini? I don't see why a server would be necessary for something this simple?

Starbucks is not a technology company. They are not going to be putting servers in each location. More than likely they're just going to be connecting their sound system to a central music service and updating their t-mobile base stations to broadcast the iTunes info and allow free access to the iTS.

They do not have the IT manpower to put servers in over 15000 locations.

That depends whether the IT guys get free double-expressos or not.

Did I say something funny? This thread seems to have already traveled to bizarro world. I could have titled it "Starbucks to have OSX baristas"

Anyway, I suppose a mini would work by just broadcasting the current and recent songs to the touch/iphone and then letting the device figure out the corresponding song on the music store. That makes more sense than having some centralized playlist, unless Starbucks HQ wanted complete control over the songs being played in each store. I'm not sure how it is currently set up, but I'm guessing they get a set of playlists from HQ that each store can play, but perhaps they have to listen to certain songs a certain number of times per day.

At any rate, I think it could be a plus for Apple if every Starbucks now runs their music programming using a Mac, be it a mini or a server. There are clearly other services that Apple could piggyback onto this. Movies seem the most obvious.

I don't know much about this, but can a base station do that?

You are probably right. The music will be hosted on a centralized iTunes Store server, and the user would be connecting directly to that server. No need for local serves in each SBUX.

What would broadcast the iTunes share info to all of the iPods then? Maybe Apple will be providing them with very cheap appliances to do this? It does make sense to have the storage for these songs located remotely, and I'm sure headquaraters will want to micromanage exactly what music is broadcast to each store... wouldn't want to give Starbucks employees autonomy

That still doesn't compel me to get coffee at Starbucks.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Ugh, not another server OS debate...

I'm guessing they'll probably just put minis in the store running some custom software on OS X client. No need to use OS X Server.

I don't know how it works but all you'd need is something that broadcasts a unique packet that the iPhone/iPod Touch listens for. If it sees that packet, it displays the Starbucks button.

I'll see if I can get the details from my contacts within Starbucks.

Sounds like a perfect job for a little appliance... It could even be Linux based

Wait...are you talking about making statements that other people find humorous, or making inane comments that amuse no one but yourself?

It's not like Kevin to take witty jabs at you, so that can't be what you mean. My arguing with you? That's similar to what he does I suppose.

Alright besson, since you're begging for it, I'm going to go ahead and assume you're using Dak because you know I'm not fond of it. You should probably go ahead and assume I'll report you if you use it again.
