It's really cool that Univision is broadcasting
tonight's Democratic Debate entirely in Spanish. It's a little frustrating for me, though, because Univision isn't part of my current package on DirecTV, and in the web simulcast, the Spanish overdub is so loud that
gringos like me can't hear the candidates speak in English.
I speak just a very small amount of Spanish,
poquito solamente, and I definitely can't follow this level of discourse
en Español, as much as I would love to.
An interesting sideline: Apparently candidates Chris Dodd and Bill Richardson — both of whom are fluent Spanish speakers — objected to the format dictated by Univision that questions be asked in Spanish, get translated into English, and the answers given in English, which are in turn translated back into Spanish for broadcast. This is not only clumsy, but it neutralizes Dodd's and Richardson's natural advantage.
Personally, I'm with Chris and Bill on this one!
Anybody know where I can hear this in English or see a transcript? The curiosity is killing me.
