So last night my just turned six year old son got a mohawk. No other kid in his school has a mohawk. He is so much braver and cooler than I was at his age.

I'm hoping he doesn't catch hell, get scarred for life, and never try something new again. He should be arriving at school about now.

Your kid looks like a badass! He looks like Flea!
BTW. The kids might not give him hell but I'll be willing to bet the teachers/admin might say something to you or your wife.

Should have been dyed a color.

I'll give you credit, I'd probably not let my offspring get a mohawk, if only purely for aesthetic reasons.

Next time, tell him not to be so conformist and get himself a left-right (rather than front-back) mohawk.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Yeah, the transformation was a little startling. He is actually a very sweet and mild-mannered boy.

THe school does has a dress code, but nothing about this type of haircut.

to the kid for sheer guts, and to you as a parent for letting him try what he wants to.

(Though I do have to say that, judging by the picture, the ’hawk is perhaps not a style to adopt permanently..?)

God, I sure hope not. I was not thrilled about the idea, and we made him wait until school was going a few weeks before letting him do this, but in the end, it seemed harmless. And will grow out. And it might be a good experience, we'll see.

Good times, good times. I think it's cool.

I've had a mohawk a few times. People treat you differently when you have one. Especially here.

Not to be more inane that usual, but this reminds me of some very weird, very random thought I had years ago. Basically, you know those guys who are so hairy they need their neck shaved when they get a haircut? And then you see this poofy line of hair popping up from their shirt collar because they never seem to get it shaved low enough? Well I pondered that kind of insane hairiness and then realized they could probably get a Mohawk going all the way down to their ass. Why? I have no idea, it wouldn't look cool or anything. I just want it to be done because I know its possible.

You're never getting that 5 seconds of your life back, sorry.

This didn't coincide with your atheism, did it?

Post agnosticism, actually. Once about four months ago.

I was never an all-out atheist. I just couldn't quite shake that last little bit of common sense I was hanging on to.
I sensed that one coming.

Ok. I thought referred to your phase as atheist.

You win this round, as I don't wish to derail this any further than I already have.

That's okay. Most of us have resigned to the fact that we're never getting back the days wasted on these boards.

Why especially here? Where is here?

(I assume you mean where you live and not the forum )

NW Louisiana.

I'd be friendly to people in a store and they'd just stare at me suspiciously. I got a LOT of bad looks from men wearing camo too.

I think this movie sticks with people.

Well the Mohawk always had that punk connotation when I was growing up, and punks were always rebels or criminals, so go ahead and figure out why people were distrustful.

I was doing it as a Native American tribute. Maybe people still distrust the red man.

Just sayin for sayin. I hope your kid isn't a bully. Usually bullies would get weird haircuts, because it was almost daring other kids to say something about it. I saw a kid when I was at the DMV, his trashy dad was letting him run all over the place, and he'd just go up to other kids, and PINCH them really hard, and they'd start crying and he'd just laugh demonically. I've never wanted to just punt a kid so badly in my life. What a piece of trash (not your seed, the one @ the DMV).

He's not even close, very gentle, sweet natured and has lots of friends. That's part of the reason I'm so freaked out about the haircut. It does make him look like a bully, which is so not him.

I agree that bullies are the product of poor parenting. It's sometimes hard to stay out of other people's parenting skills when you see little kids picking on others.

Nah, you can tell by looking at your boy that he's not a bully. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks Jawbone. My wife just called after picking him up from school. He told her he had a great day. A couple kids laughed and he just told them "I like it, so leave me alone."

I'm looking forward to hearing all about it tonight.

Good-natured, self-confident, and has a mohawk. Not bad.

I'm going to go start working on my sister to let my nephews get mohawks.

I think you should start working on your sister for her to get a mohawk. Then post that picture.
