MacNN | Apple hits 1 million iPhone mark early

Is it just me or is this insane? I bet Steve Ballmer is biting his tongue.

I don't have one, and don't plan on getting one, but I think it is great news.

I'd like to know how many were sold since the infamous price drop.

I don't think that 4 days of price-dropped iPhone sales played a big role in that.

Ok, so we have 74 days of iPhone sales, total of 1M units.

The time AFTER the price drop was 4 days worth of sales = 5% of that sales period.

So, let's assume they sold TWICE as many iPhone after the drop. That would mean that 1M sold units equal 78 sales days, pre-price dropped.

The additional effect from that drop would be 5% x 1M units, 50k units.

Assuming also that Apple hadn't dropped the price, they would have reached the 1M mark at day 78 or 79, still about 15% ahead of target, instead of 20% WITH the price drop.
Ergo: in all likelyhood, the price drop was NOT material to the 1M units sold.

See what I mean by "not a big role" ?

Well, you just destroyed me with lots of math, since that's definitely not my strong suit. But what I was thinking is if Apple managed to move something 100k after the price drop, I'd consider that a solid contribution (10% in 4 days? yeah). As for pace, I have no idea about that. Perhaps iPhone sales were stagnating, perhaps they were steady. I have no idea.

Well, we can argue here what is significant or not.

Me personally, I think DOUBLE sales would be more than Apple expected from this price drop. But we will never know for sure.

And I'm not looking for that. I wanted to know what your line of thinking was, and I gave you mine in return.

and growing....

I'd buy one if the camera wasn't a pile of rotting donkey crap. I don't understand the point of such a shitty camera. It doesn't replace even a decent point and shoot, the image quality is HORRID. So I'd still have to lug around my tiny Canon SD10.

arstechica have a nice comparison for the sales - the RAZR was sold for $500 at launch, and sold 750,000 in 3 months.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

Wait, a built-in cellphone snapper is not a camera replacement?

Color me SHOCKED.

Stop the press; I gotta get me an editor on the line.

So 750,000 in 3 months roughly correlates to 120 days to sell 1 million Razrs. That means the iPhone needed about 62% of the time the Razr did to sell 1 million units.

But that was w/o a contract, right ?

And you'd get a nice rebate with a contract, which you don't get with the iPhone.

The phone was initially regarded as an exclusive fashion phone,[1] with a high price of $500 with service agreement and $800 without. However, in 2005 the phone entered the mass-market as a mid-priced phone.

That is the one thing I find funny about people bitching about the price of the iPhone.
A phone with less features, and to me ugly design, sold for just as much with just a tight of contract yet the iPhone gets slapped around..../wonders
