Doctor Says Bills’ Everett Will Walk Again - New York Times

Yesterday, the doctor was saying that he was doubtful Everett would walk again. Today he was able to voluntarily move his arms and legs. It will be a while, but they think he will recover. Though, I seriously doubt he will play football again.

They're saying that cooling him down is what may have prevented permanent paralysis.

What does that have to do with anything?

This is great news to hear he has a chance to walk again.
My parents are from Buffalo so they are always watching the Bills play, and this was an unfortunate event that happened.

Very good news. He may not be able to play football again, but being able to walk and actually feel things is always nice.

My thoughts as well. It would be really sad if he became a quadriplegic at age 25.

The treatement was interesting. A cool saline solution injected into veins. Lowered his spine to 92º, roughly.

A lot of the research behind that treatment came out of Miami University, which has a special program for spinal injuries, which Ralph Wilson (The Bills' owner) helped fund. A nice full-circle story.

I was watching the game when it happened. The hit didn't seem particularly hard, it must have just hit in just the right spot. I'm glad to hear that his condition is getting better.

That's some good news. It's interesting how they used hypothermia to treat this type of injury.

It's also important to remember that some part of his prognosis takes into account not only his age but his athletic status. He's probably in very good health except for the injury, and very fit cardiovascularly. he's also used to some pretty harsh training, so his rehab-and the likelihood of his return to relatively normal functioning-will likely be more effective.

Since his cord was compressed but not otherwise damaged (from the press report), it's quite possible that he'll recover enough to be pretty much indistinguishable from people who never had such an injury. But having a fusion of cervical vertebrae certainly will prevent him from taking part in any contact sport.
