After just returning from Australia where these things are everywhere, I have decided to build a sail awning on my rooftop garden to shield the garden from the tropical sun and look cool. Something like this but white:
The problem is I can't find any instructions to build one on the web?
Can anyone suggest the type of Material I need to source and and type of fixings I need to use? any other advise, I don't want to have to buy one off the shelf!

One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

Alternatively IKEA sells them for a couple of bucks with everything you need. We have two, in the city and one out in the country. They work very well. Apart from the challenge there's no real need to build one yourself. The fabric is heavy duty and you'll be needing an industrial sewing machine to handle it.

Make sure you have some strong anchor points... if you expect to get any wind at all.

Rooftop Garden eh? How high. Wind can get pretty rough the higher you go and I doubt you have 4 or 5ft of soil to dig into to pour cement. I second the post above and make sure you're sure about your anchor points.
Then again…………… I'd rather just go sailing.

That's the main reason we are getting a sail and not a permanent awning, Hong Kong gets some nasty typhoons so we can easily take it down before hand.
FYI Ikea in Hong Kong does not sell outdoor furniture.
I found this company in Perth (AUS) who are happy to ship to Hong Kong.
Shade sails Online
Will post pictures when done.
