so forum member natnabour and myself are gonna be visiting NY in a few weeks and we were wondering where people from NY would suggest two tourists to go check out. we've never visited before and were both graphic design nerds. so far we have a few things planned out (museums, conan o'brien, apple store) but i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on fun stuff to do while in new york.

Do you have tickets to Conan? The reason I ask is because I have tickets to November 2nd (around there) and have 2 free.

Otherwise, Central Park is really nice and the 5th Ave. Apple Store is on the edge of the partk, and definitely worth a visit.
The Natural History Museum across Central Park from the Metropolitan Museum. Remember that the entrance price to museums are the recommended price, and you can pay them whatever you would like to. I think Natural History is $18 and the Metropolitan is $20. I went to both two weeks ago and gave them each a few dollars.

The Statue of Libery has a ferry nearby that will take you past it and it's free. If you want to go onto the actual island then you have to pay.

There is an amazing chocolatier here called Max Brenner. They have proper food but the big thing about them is the dessert. There is one in Union Square, but it's really busy. There is a small one a bit more south and it's normally a lot quieter. If you like chocolate, I highly suggest visiting this place.

Go see a Broadway show (I never thought I'd EVER hear myself say that). Wicked is freaking cool.

Times Square, of course.

Hang out in Grand Central for a bit, people watching.

SOHO shopping.

"New" Little Italy/China Town area shopping on the weekends.

GRIMALDI'S PIZZA in Brooklyn, then the pier (and ice cream).

The twilight boat tours are also nice. We took the 45 minute one and it didn't seem nearly as long as I thought it would.

+1 for hanging in Central Park.

Oh yeah, Avenue A east of Houston St.
The whole lower eastside is fun to walk through because much of it is still old school nyc, broken sidewalks and all.
And ya gotta go to Katz's deli and Yonah Schimmels knishery if you're into gorging yourself.

Daily Show. The Cloisters. BXL café close to Times Square for some all-you-can-eat mussels and belgian deers on draft. Walking the Brooklyn bridge. Hoboken for a good view of Manhattan. River Rd in Weehawken for an even better view.
Somebody suggested chocolate : Jacques Torres for the best chocolate in town.

  • The Cloisters
  • Staten Island Ferry ride to see the Statue of Liberty
  • Walking through Greenwich Village (Avoid SoHo and Canal Street if at all possible; they are too "shoppy")
  • Take the subway to Brooklyn, get pizza at Grimaldi's, and walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge at dusk
(Hang out with all the other tourists in the middle of the bridge and watch the Empire State Building light up)
  • Take the subway out to Coney Island just to say you were there; Eat at Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs
  • I would recommend MoMA over the Natural History museum
  • Wander through Central Park
  • Wander through mid-town and watch the crowds
  • Another vote for Katzs Deli
That's it for starters.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

For a different museum view go to PS1 and the Noguchi museum in Queens. I think PS1 is a part of MOMA. It always has bizarre stuff.

Take the train to Coney Island. The F goes above ground and you can see all of Brooklyn spread out around you. Then walk the boardwalk. On the way back stop in Park Slope (5th AVe or 7th Ave) or Carroll Gardens for food.

Take the ferry to Staten Island. A low cost way to see the harbor and the statue of liberty without having to fight crowds.

Greenwich Village is pretty cool. I live here.
SoHo
Madison Square Park for Shake Shack (have to go at like 3pm or 11pm on a weekday or else the lines are disgusting)
Wander around!

I can't agree more. Especially 5th Avenue for restaurants.

You could also add the Green Wood cemetary to that excursion (if that's your cup of tea), as it's between the Slope and Coney Island and it's just amazing.

Get out of Manhattan and see the rest of the city a bit. Most of the Manhattan suggestions are very touristy and frankly overrated - I'm looking at you Katz's, yes I am.

But depends on what your into really. Quite frankly I adore Chinatown/Canal street, even though it's been mentioned here as a place to avoid.

If you like cigars.. Nat Sherman on Fifth Ave is a really nice store.
FAO Schartz... if you must see the big piano or the MASSIVE stuffed animals.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions.

Do you have any recommendations for extensive design/art bookstores?

Also...any suggestions for nightlife? Something with an interesting flare like.....dancing midgets on Friday nights or....imported beer from all over the world or...rooftop bar...or a cool theme? I'm sure there are plenty out there, we just need to be pointed in the right direction.

When I was in residency, the endocrinologist I rotated with used to live in New York. Grew up there.

Anyway, he was always fond of saying, "You don't need to go to Broadway to see a Broadway show." He meant that you could go to say, Cleveland, Ohio and see a show that had played on Broadway for much less.

He DID say that there were great off-Broadway shows that were worth going to see in NYC, however.
