Apple Stores Gird For Friday Leopard Launch -- Mac OS X -- InformationWeek

Apple is confident that the slick new interface that Leopard -- officially known as OSX 10.5--brings to its PCs and laptops will help it cut into Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s dominance of the PC operating system market.

To that end, Leopard features a number of graphical enhancements that redefine the way users interact with their Macintosh computers. A feature called Stacks arranges all the files in a folder into a fan shape when the folder is clicked on. It's meant to counter Windows Vista's Flip 3D interface, which sorts files and windows into a cascading, three-dimensional view.

Leopard also borrows heavily from Apple's successful iPod interface. An enhanced Finder tool lets users leaf through icons representing their files the same way they can flip through music tracks on the digital music player. Another new feature allows users to make desktop backgrounds out of their favorite digital images. Apple is also hoping that new productivity enhancements and security tools built into the 64-bit Leopard will push it deeper into the business computing world, where the company's largely been shut out by Microsoft.
(Emphasis mine)

What? Did they go around the room and ask who knows the least about computers, and tell them to write the review of Leopard?

Holy crap.

Yeah, that 'make desktop backgrounds' line discredits the article a bit.

Ha! information week.

From the article comments:
Wow!!! Leopard sounds almost as good as Windows 98. They should sell thousands of copies.

"A feature called Time Machine works with an external hard drive to automatically create backups of users' complete system image -- including files and the data within." - Nice to see that they can steal features from vista.

I like how the person who wrote that has no idea about 10.5 nor Vista.
Stacks is in no way anything like Flip 3D. Has the writer even used Flip 3D? How is a fancy 3D way to switch between active applications anyway similar to fanned folder contents?

"Did they go around the room and ask who knows the least about computers, and tell them to write the review of Leopard?"
Exactly.

Wow. Is the same guy that supposedly reviewed a brand new Mac, but somehow spent a $1200 premium, got a discontinued mouse model with his supposedly brand new Mac, and was somehow using Microsoft Outlook on OS X?

As Master Shake would say, "Now that I've seen Leopard in his review, it is the SHIZNITE!"

Well, you never know. Microsoft might have disabled it for Vista

As an web writer myself, that pissed me off. I sent an email to him pointing out all of the flaws. Hopefully he'll fix them.

Will do. FWIW, here is my original message:

I was very disappointed to read your article about Mac OS X Leopard. It is an atrocity in terms of accuracy. You speak of many features completely incorrectly. For your sake and the sake of various uninformed readers, please fix the article.

Here are some of your biggest blunders:

A feature called Stacks arranges all the files in a folder into a fan shape when the folder is clicked on. It's meant to counter Windows Vista's Flip 3D interface, which sorts files and windows into a cascading, three-dimensional view.
Stacks is a feature that fans out icons of DOCUMENTS. It is an alternative to folders, and there is no alternative in Vista. Vista's Flip3D is a way of displaying open windows, and is comparable to Mac OS X's Exposé, which was implemented years before Vista.

An enhanced Finder tool lets users leaf through icons representing their files the same way they can flip through music tracks on the digital music player.
This is called "CoverFlow" and it borrows from iTunes, not the iPod. The iPod borrowed from iTunes as well.

Another new feature allows users to make desktop backgrounds out of their favorite digital images.
Setting any picture as your desktop has been a feature in both Mac OS and Windows for at least a decade. This sentence should be completely omitted.

A Spotlight search tool lets users quickly troll through their in-boxes to find the messages most important to them.
Spotlight is a system wide search tool. Vista's Search in the Start Menu is a copy of it, for comparison.

Thanks,
Adam Fisher-Cox

Because mac users expect people to be proficient in what they are writing about?

My goal was to get a basically accurate article. Adding in functionality of certain components might have confused him.

I hate that Stacks changes the folder icons for Applications, Utilities and crap.

I know. I don't want some cluttered stack with Address Book's icon sitting on top to mean "Applications"

Engadget has a Vista vs. 10.5 comparison.
I disagree with a few things.

* Indexed search -- Spotlight vs. Instant Search, Search Folders. (Tie)
Maybe 10.4's Spotlight vs. Vista's search. 10.5 includes almost instant app search, calculator, and dictionary search in spotlight.

* Browser -- Safari 3 vs. Internet Explorer 7 (Tie)
They said "What can we say, we like Opera!"
Nothing against Opera, but like the top article's Flip 3D vs. Stacks comment, saying Internet Explorer is on par with the rest of the browsers is idiotic.

* File manager -- Upgraded Finder vs. Upgraded Explorer (Explorer)
They said "The new finder is great, no doubt, but it lacks the raw power of Explorer"
This one is personal, but I really dislike the new Windows Explorer.

* Antivirus -- Nope vs Nope (Tie)
I like how it's a fault against Mac OS because it doesn't need virus scanners
