So
Stupid
I had this idea for a character. I had the perfect name. Very few Google references (it's a translation of something in Japanese). I check Godaddy and it's available. Do I buy it then? No. Why? I dunno. Procrastination maybe?
Two days later, it's gone. A squatter took it.
Coincidence?
Maybe. I've checked named on Godaddy many times before and never once had a name stolen. However, I DID check the name on Google first.
So if you ever see a site name and it's available, just register the friggin' thing.

So far I've been offered up to $15,000 for a domain that I own. I was waiting for $20,000, but I may wait for even more.

Very nice, Buckaroo.
Hey starman, you may want to check out this /. article. Here's a great piece of advice from the comments there - use the command host -t NS domain.com (obviously substituting domain.com for the domain you want to check) to check on domain name availability, and at least you're only querying your local DNS server and not the whole Internet.

Indeed. I too learned that lesson the hard way.

I've seen this happen before and I've read about it. If you use godaddy (which I do) and check for a domain, the odds are pretty good that it will get snarfed up by someone. This happened a couple of times to me. I swear godaddy uses bots to auto register a domain if someone doesn't pull the trigger.
As an example, I was looking at a .net domain, almost pulled the trigger but didn't like you I go back and it was taken. Now the .org and .com were not taken which really leads me to believe its a bot.
And yes I'm paranoid

But there were times I checked a name and weeks later it was still avail. I dunno, I'm not convinced GD does it. Someone could very well be checking Google searches as well.

I stupidly mentioned to a small group that I was going to register the domain "Cape******". It was available that day, but the next it was gone. There are many capes around the U.S.(cape Ann, Fear, Canaveral etc...), so I thought what a sucky coincidence. However, when i did a search of the person who registered the name I found they lived just two towns away from me.
Hard lesson learned. Don't talk, just do.
