This is my dog, Isabella, after she was attacked by another dog on Tuesday (specifically, a pit bull):

She looks like a foot. She has lacerations on her throat and her left ear was torn almost all the way through, but she'll be okay. Thankfully. It could have been a lot worse.

I blame the owner, who left his dog roaming around without a leash (and without him). My mom couldn't pry Isabella out of its throat.

Maybe this will open that can of worms that we love so much. That's not my intention, though, and I hope it doesn't. I just needed to post this.

That sucks.

Stop your browsing and go give her a big hug (minding the sore bits, obviously). Right now. Do it.

In cases like this, it would be best to call Animal Control and report the dog as vicious. At the least, they will talk to the owner. At the most, they will take the dog away.

Unfortunetely, I was 400 miles away at the time this happened. If I was there, I might have taken out my pocket knife.

And I'm still 400 miles away, but I'll see her for Thanksgiving. I'll hug her then, obviously.

Are you sure it was a pitbull? Many people like to call a dog a pitbull whenever it attacks anything.

I'd sue the bastard owners that allowed their dog out like that.

It's getting to the point that you need a taser to take your dog for a walk.

Pathetic - sorry for both of you.

My mom couldn't tell what kind of dog it was, but a witness who reported the incident to the people at our housing development said it was a pit bull, and she apparently knows dogs very well.

I know of a situation where one gal in NYC, a friend, had to carry a baseball bat out with her when she walked her dog because she was attacked viciously by roaming pit bulls - three times on separate occasions. The pit bulls, it turned out, belonged to a homeless man.

Why did you write EAR on its head?

"Tony Blair is very anxious to be seen as green. Everything has to be couched in environmental language - even if it's slightly Orwellian." - Jonathan Mendelsohn, director of general election resources for the British Labour Party.

pinenuts: your location is annoying as hell.

I didn't write EAR. She emerged from the hospital like that.

I am sorry that your dog was injured!

But this reminds me of the time (around 15 years ago) when I took care of the neighbors Rottweiler while they were gone. The Rottweiler was called Mona and was a very well trained guard dog.
When I took her for a walk it happened quite often that some small little "rat" wanted to go for a fight but she was trained for such situations and completely ignored small dogs...
...bigger dogs (German sheppard, Dobermann, ...) on the other hand were a different story! If the owners thought that their dogs wouldn't need a leash, I also let Mona go...fights were usually short and Mona was the proud winner (never serious injuries though - she wasn't a killer)!
I miss her!

Oh, hell no. You didn't just go there. My dog just fought for her life against an angry pit bull. My mom was so terrified and upset that her screams prompted many of our neighbors to come outside. My dog's throat and ear were gushing with blood, and her ear was almost ripped in half.

How dare you start insulting the dog that has been a loyal friend to my family for the past 8 years? You make me want to puke.

It was a joke.

But seriously, I don't think you should claim 'It wUz tEh PiTbuLl!' unless you know for SURE it was a pit. Again, lots of dog attacks happen, and if it was a mutt, or some other dog that didn't look like a poodle, dalmation, or golden retreiver, many 'witnesses' will claim it was a pitbull, purely because of the media.

No offense.
Putting no offense [or calling it a joke] after an insulting post does not make it any less insulting. You did offend him, and your timing is impeccable. The dog is hurt and you're ripping into Tav for how the dog got groomed.

I see compassion is one of your strong points

That's where the vet put her ears. It's not where they normally go.

They would naturally hang down at the sides of her head, which would place them over the wounds on her neck.

PS: in case anyone cares, the sticky bandage (vetwrap or vetrap) they're using here is the exact same sticky bandages they use on people, only it's costs less and comes in awesome colors. Highly recommended.

I hope your Isabella can totally recover for such savagery… Sadly sometimes there is not much we can do other than stick by our furry friends… And help them as best we can. (I have two dogs, albeit small ones, a Maltese and a Lasha Apso).

I also would like to know about any device which would be helpful just in case any of my dogs gets attacked by a untrained dog… I don't want to harm the other dog just to prevent it doing any harm to them… they are both a small breed.

I carry a gun (legally) when I walk my dog. If some piece of trash wants to let their dangerous dog roam the neighborhood, they'd better be ready to bury it.

And to Wal-Mart, just in case their customer service stinks.

But please do so only in Amaraca !!1!11one

Of course, because being prepared to defend one's life is dumb?
I carry a large folding knife clipped to the back of my running shorts (it hides nicely in the small of my back and behind my shirt) when jogging or walking. I'm prepared to gut any hostile vertebrate.

Ditto. The blade is the legal limit, but there's a 1" section of unsharpened area behind the blade, before the handle, so it's basically about a 4" blade. If some crazy dog attacked mine, I'd stab the thing.

So your new thing is trying to talk down to people by using words that make them out to be younger than you? That's cool.
