So a couple of you know I got a new (well, new to me) car last month. I got a 1999 Honda Accord EX-V6 coupe. I've really enjoyed it, it's been a great car for me. Decent gas mileage, good power (although not as much as the Volvo, but that's a good thing), and it's comfortable for the ever-more prevalent traffic jams. I keep it in the garage, and I guess that's a bad thing now. Today a shelf in the garage collapsed, a shelf that happened to have slate tiles and some other crap on it (propane tank, lantern, blah blah). It was right next to my car about six feet up. Needless to say, my passenger side window is scraped everywhere with huge gouges in it (I'm lucky it didn't break completely) and a few cracks, the door has 9 large dents now (one that busted all the way through) and a ton of scratches that completely scraped off the paint. There's also a dent in the roof that almost went all the way through the metal. A quick estimate was $1,200 to $1,500. This is really irritating. I'll probably just have to repaint the whole car. The annoying thing is, even though it has 99k miles on it, the car is perfect. Nobody ever sat in the back seat, hardly anyone in the front passenger seat. It's immaculate. Now I've got all these dents and scratches. Anyway, this is really ticking me off, I just needed to rant. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that! That would make me cry.

Here's what you do: Get a new door from a junkyard. Yes. A new door. Bondo will only come back later, replace it if it unbolts. Get the roof repainted, and the door repainted. No sense in doing other stuff.

That's considered a comprehensive claim and won't affect your rates at all.

Assuming you have comp that is.

I do have comp, but my deductable is $1k. I'll just have it painted (the rear quarter panel is damaged too), get a new door and window and run up a nice fee.

For future reference, check to see what it would cost to lower your comp ded. It generally isn't much compared to collision.

Yeah, I plan on doing that. However, being a 16 year old with a red Honda V6 coupe isn't the cheapest per month, having the deductible high lowers the monthly cost (I pay about $120 a month right now).

That SUCKS! So sorry for your loss. I was going to mention something you could do but it would be less than honest and I wouldn't want karma coming back at ME for mentioning it. Did you check homeowners insurance, they might cover your deductable.

If it makes you feel better I dropped my 8GB iPhone in the toilet yesterday. Its still working mostly but its still very aggravating.

Sounds like a home owner's insurance claim as it was in the garage at the time it was damaged.

We checked homeowner's insurance, but they wouldn't cover it. I'll figure out something, probably end up selling my Power Mac and PowerBook. And zerostar, I can feel your pain! That would suck!

Wait wait, you are 16? And your dad lets you drive his 99 V6 accord coupe? Then I'm guessing it was paid for with your dad's money. Don't fret. Just go crying to him, and he'll pay to fix it.

PS: What kind of parent buys their kid a car with over 230+hp for their 1st car. Jesus.

You're cool.

And if you read the OP, he obviously has had at l least one car before this (a volvo). And he said he's paying monthly payments on this car, same thing I did when I was 16 and got my first car (that I still have, now 100% paid off). Don't be such a dick.

No he didn't. He was talking about the monthly insurance cost.

Anyway, dude. Fix the car. Sell it. Get something old, but nice. Something worth under 3 grand, but either stored or owned by an old lady. The insurance should be about half of what you're paying now, which is basically just throwing money down the toilet.

There are very few situations where a homeowners/renters policy would cover damage to a vehicle. Usually (but not always), it is limited to theft of contents in a vehicle (excluding items that are a part of the vehicle).

I figured if your house broke and damaged something that it would be covered by the HO policy. I learn new things all the time.

If the house burned down with the car in the garage would the HO policy cover it?

I'm pretty sure auto insurance would. At least mine would. It covers theft, flood, fire, tornado, etc.

I'm pretty sure the money you're talking about isn't his. It's his parents.

In California, the chances are very, very slim. If the car was a classic being restored, was 95% done and had photos showing the process? Maybe.

Each state is different though.

I had one of those Hondas and they are very easy to get attached to. Quite sleek. Honestly the estimate sounds REAL low. I had minor work done on mine (when the McDonald's Drive thru warning bar fell on it) and it was a grand. My guess is it will be more and the $1000 deductible will reasonable.

Are you sure about that? Autos.msn.com seems to think that the 99 Accord EX V6 Coupe had a 200hp V6 only available in a V6. That's not all that impressive.

You are correct. I was thinking of 2003+. Still, the 99 accord is pretty quick. It will definitely scoot well past 120mph. 200hp is about 100hp more than any 16 yr old needs to get into trouble.

Good thing I don't drive 120 mph, but it's slower than the Volvo was. The fastest I've driven it is 80 on a 75. And we went over the who's car it is issue in another thread. My mom bought it, I own it (the title is in my name.)

Hi my name is Josh, I'm 25 and I ride a bike to work most days. Rain or shine. I don't own a car. Today I took a train and then walked 10 minutes to work. I've not driven a car in over two years.

I also cry tears of pain for you. Mental hugs comin your way.

Don't mind him, he just assumes that everyone is as brash and irresponsible as he was as 16.

Ha ha thanks. I've actually wanted to ride my bike to school, it's only 2.7 miles away. Sadly, almost all of it's uphill, and two major roads intersect it, so I haven't really got the courage to do it yet.
