I'm looking for a video camera for around $500. It will be mostly for family videos and my new daughter. Any recommendations or suggestions on what I should look for? There seem to be lots of different formats and storage options nowadays.

Well if you want to edit it on your Mac with iLife, you want one with tape. DVD and HDD are a big hassle.

I like the Canon Elura 100.

No proper support in iLife.

Quality from DV tape is better anyway.

You can't import from a dvd or hdd camera to iLife? That seems odd. Why is it any different than from tape? Is it encoded in some format that QT can't read?

And wasn't steve up there on stage touting some swanky new format?

Are you talking about AVCHD?

Cuz you aren't gonna get an AVCHD camcorder for $500.

Not sure what I'm talking about with camcorders. That's why I'm seeking the advice of the forum experts!

I just bought this for $130 at bestbuy.com and I'm pretty happy with it. It has a problem with tearing (which in HD looks more like smooth gentle writhing), but only if you try to pan the camera across a scene quickly. And it came with a free tripod to take care of that. Its native format is h264 mov, which is compatible with iLife.

I don't know if that's the kind of thing you had in mind.
