My mother was raised in a small town in northern Minnesota called Ely (pronounced e-lee). It is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and a pretty cool town in itself.

Because my mother works for another hospital in Minnesota, she found out that the Ely hospital was trying to win an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine from this site.

I guess the only way to do this is for the Ely hospital to get the most votes after "watching" a 2 minute video. (I found I could fast forward through the whole video in 2 seconds, then record my vote). To support this hospital, go to this site.

Because this is a VERY small town, but the largest one around for many miles, it makes sense for them to have an MRI. I highly doubt they'd be able to afford one on their own. By the way, Ely is the home of Will Steger, the famous explorer who keeps visiting the North Pole. Maybe he's used to the cold weather???

If you get the urge, vote for this hospital. Or not, it's your choice. Just thought I'd mention this to help support this hospital. I get absolutely no benefit from this MRI, but I happen to like the city. Of course, if I'm ever driving through and have a stroke, I'd really appreciate them having an MRI machine.

Wow, you've got some catching up to do, Sumter Regional Hospital in Ga. already has >132,000 votes.

Good luck.

Voted -- although that video was surreal. I was feebleminded for 3 rounds after watching it

Yeah, I figured it might be difficult for this town to win. It isn't the largest city in the country. In fact, most people in this town probably know everyone else by name.

I'm guessing the closest MRI to this city is about a three hour drive by car.

Just for educational value, there is a lady in this town (Will Steger's wife) who sells the most comfortable, warmest boots you could ever own. They are Mukluks. My wife and I got a pair a few winters ago, and really like them.

Ely was also home to a famous canoe builder, Joe Seliga. I've never tried one of his canoes, but I would imagine there is nothing more relaxing.

Someone at Siemens had a stroke of genius. I did not expect that kind of "advertising" from them

Yes, very un-Siemens like. Perhaps the most boring corporation in existence.

As far as amateur videos go, that wasn't half as painful as I had expected. I did my part. I hope Ely gets its MRI!

Many thanks guys. If you want to get away from it all, I highly recommend the Boundry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You will really, really be away from it all.

One more famous person from Ely: Jim Brandenburg the photographer

One of Jim's sample photos - notice the clouds form a bird in the sky.

Thanks - this hospital is currently in 5th place (but very close to 4th place). This is only open to hospitals with less than 180 beds without a permanent MRI installation.

Anyone have any ideas how I can I use the internet to get them into first place?

Edit: Looks like someone else has already submitted this story to Digg. Cool!

Living in Minnesota and spending much of my time in northern Minnesota, I know exactly where Ely is. Having watched my father suffer through three strokes after being misdiagnosed as having sun stroke because the local hospital in Park Rapids, MN, didn't have an MRI, I know these machines can save lives. I voted.

Voting has ended! I noticed yesterday that I could no longer vote at the end of the video. It ended December 31st. It will be strange, as I got into the habit of visiting the site daily on my 3 computers to vote!

a) The question of whether or not it's spam was addressed in the thread title, SIX WEEKS AGO.

b) The majority of posters back then appear to have decided not to care.

c) Even if it WAS spam then, it certainly isn't anymore, since the actual voting process has expired, anyway. In fact, the only reason this thread is still active is because somebody bothered to mention that it's no longer active.

Historical SPAM, then.

a) A thread title that says "this is not a thread" is untrue too - there is nothing in vB that ensures that thread titles are truthful.

b) is an interesting take on SPAM detection, though- if most people (that post) are willing to treat it as if it isn't SPAM, then it isn't? I don't see this logic catching on with forum moderators any time soon.

Threads announcing new software that are appropriately titled as such are generally considered acceptable, as well.

And the interest in posting *those* threads is decidedly more commercial than here.

Does this thread really need to devolve into an argument over how appropriate it is, especially considering that it was already deemed worth leaving open six weeks ago?

I'd rather not.

Nope. So you can have the last word.
