Oh, here's the solution!

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The first thing I think of when I hear "Für Elise" is "my CPU fan is failing or has failed!"

That's pretty freakin' awesome.

So instead of an annoying "beeeeeeeeep" you hear "it's a small world after all..."

I'm having a hard time deciding which would actually be more annoying/

It's true, the line between genius and lunacy is fine indeed.

Dakar, that was an inane and pointless comment, and I will have none of that in my thread.

Since an error alarm is supposed to annoy you into taking notice, I would not have chosen Classical music. Something from heavy metal maybe.

Wouldn't SOS in Morse Code be a bit more obvious?

Dude, nothing is more annoying than "It's A Small World".

Which, as a result of reading that KB article, is now stuck in my head.

Sucks for you, I guess. Despite having been on that ride more than 10 times in the last year, I don't know the melody.

So can Disney & the RIAA sue Microsoft for using "It's a Small World" on their computers?

No, but theoretically they could sue the manufacturer of the motherboard/BIOS.

"It's a Small World" is classical music? Not in my book.

Here are a few of my favorite "death chimes" that Apple used to use back in the old days (yep, I stole these from Mactracker):

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
