 I remember him in the 70s. Had many of his chopper toys. He was like an idol to me. My real first.
He was human however, and had his demons.

He was like the fonz. But he could actually ride a motorbike. He recently commented on how kids today with their superlight and nice suspension motorbikes shouldn't need a landing platform. 
You gotta admit, that was a heavy H.D. he was riding. Esp compared to the one his son Robbie used to jump.

Well Evel had his rep too
While Knievel was healing from his latest round of injuries, the book Evel Knievel on Tour was released. Authored by Knievel's promoter for the Snake River Canyon jump, Sheldon Saltman, the book painted a less than perfect picture of Knievel's character and alleged that he abused his wife and kids and that he used drugs. Knievel, with both arms still in casts, flew to California to confront Saltman, a VP at Twentieth Century Fox. Outside the studio commissary, one of Knievel's friends grabbed Shelly and held him, while Knievel attacked him with an aluminum baseball bat, declaring, "I'm going to kill you!" According to a witness to the attack, Knievel struck repeated blows at Saltman's head, with Saltman blocking the blows with his left arm. Saltman's arm and wrist were shattered in several places before he fell to the ground unconscious. It took numerous surgeries and permanent metal plates in his arm to eventually give Saltman back the use of his arm. He had been a left-handed competitive tennis player before the attack. Sheldon Saltman's book was pulled from the shelves by the publisher after Knievel threatened to sue. Saltman later produced documents in both criminal and civil court that proved that, although Knievel claimed to have been insulted by statements in Saltman's book, he and his lawyers had actually been given editorial access to the book and had approved and signed off on every word prior to its publication. On October 14, 1977, Knievel pleaded guilty to battery and was sentenced to three years probation and six months in the county jail, during which he publicly flaunted his brief incarceration for the press as just one more publicity stunt.
He also was known to beat on women, and pretty much turned Robbie into a alcoholic. But like I said. Everyone has their demons.

I listen to The Jim Rome Show on the radio and Evel has been on before and even called up once and awhile. There was an old interview he had when Jim asked him about the Snake River Canyon jump and how evel said it was about a 50/50 chance that he could die. Jim asked him....well then why did you do it?
Evel said "do you know who the hell i am?"

Linda Evans filmed that...
He wanted the TV station to film it and pay him so much but they refused. Told him if he filmed it and it amounted to anything they would buy it off him. They eventually ended up paying TONS more for it than they would have had they just agreed to film it.
300 jumps in all.. 276 successful. The one above had to have hurt.

I was a TAD too young to miss his prime. I was born in 73. But I still was around for the after effects. I remember getting some toy of his for Christmas in the 70s. He had to have made a ton of money a lone just on merchandising.
His pinball machine was pimp.

That him and his family reconciled. That things were right in the Knievel family before he passed.
Maybe that is what was keeping him alive all these years.

Evel Knievel may have been a womanizing alcoholic, but so what, he was a legend on the motorcycle.
I had this toy of his when I was a kid. Along with my planet of the apes dolls, it was my favorite toy at the time, lol.

Butte, MT is the biggest sh-thole of a town I have ever seen (or lived in). Alot of poverty, unemployment, kids fighting, adults fighting, super fund site in uptown, corrupt cops... Evel's attitude and demeanor is typical in Butte
