I'd be interest to read what members here considered to be the best suited OS for various models of Mac and what RAM config makes best sense.

For example any modern Mac is going to be best suited to the latest version of the OS and max out the ram, but what about an old iMac G3. Is Tiger good or is 10.3 better, and RAM, Max it out or is that overkill?
And a Mac Mini G4 - Tiger?

What do people think?

I think that any G3 or G4 can run Tiger just fine, given enough ram and hard drive space. However, there is an on going debate that it is better to run Panther on G3s. You will always get the biggest bang for your buck maxing out ram on older machines. In your specific example, a G3 iMac can run Tiger, a Mac Mini G4 definitely should run Tiger (not Panther), it could also run Leopard comfortably.

I had a G4 running Tiger no problems. The bottleneck as I see it, is available ram. The more ram you have the better the experience. Apple's done a great job at making each revision of OSX a bit faster. So to put it succinctly I'd go with the minimum requirements that are stated for each version of OSX,

I have Tiger running on my parents' (my old) 400MHz G3 iMac w/544MB of RAM. It works fine for Mail, Safari, and Word. I wouldn't want to do much more with it though.

Panther is probably the best for all but the highest end G3s.
