Does wine help? I'm not sure, but it makes me a little sleepy. Not too much, it'll have the wrong affect.

I think zro has the correct solution. Thanksgiving dinner does it too me every time.

Sex if you can swing it.
Horlicks works too, if you can get it in the colonies.
Skipping a night (i.e. no sleep at all) sometimes kicks your system back into shape.

Don't engage in anything exciting (unless you can swing the sex) for about an hour before sleep. No exciting books. No worries of the day.

Or you could just watch a cricket match. That'll do it.

there was just a big article in the New York Times.

Basic summary: pills really don't work that great. Live right. The end.

meaning all the stuff they usually say. Exercise but not too late in the day. Don't watch TV in bed or anything else but sex and sleep. Don't nap in the day. Get up in the morning. Reset your clock by exposing yourself to morning light. Don't drink caffein after...well times vary but mid afternoon. Look out for sneaky caffein like that hidden in soda. Alcohol is counter productive because you wake up later or it disturbs your brain patterns somehow. Be sure you're not cold or hot. Don't stuff your face too close to bed time so you're not burping up salsa or something. Set up a peaceful bedtime routine. Warm bath.

My technique is to have 3 hyper children who run me ragged so I'm exhausted by 9 pm and begging them to let me go to bed. So that supports the exercise thing. If you sit in a chair all day long you're not going to have gotten the twitchies out.

I also like petting a cat. They set a very good sleep example. Having a cat is like having a sleep guru to guide you in the ways of the snooze.

I've never had any luck with melatonin, other otc sleep aids do help a bit. Try turning off any light sources / covering up any windows you might have, total darkness makes it easier to fall asleep. Gotten any exercise lately?

Find a compelling reason to wake up by 6:15 every day and do it consistently. Set your cell phone to wake you at that time. You'll change your habits soon enough. It's a good idea to correct your insomnia because you want to avoid cancer risk associated with an abnormal sleep pattern.

I made these glasses once that had LEDs built into them that pulses at a certain frequency that were supposed to make you sleep. An ex of mine saw the project on the web, and since she knew I knew how to solder and etch my own boards she put me to work. Not sure if they really worked or not. Could just be all in her head.

There was lots of stuff fighting up there.

I read some stuff on that - I think it induces REM sleep patterns.

I only sleep 3-4 hours a night, on average. Usually, I can make myself sleep more, but it seems like a waste.

On the rare occasion that I can't seem to drift off, I take some NyQuil Cold/Flu liquid, the alcohol combined with Doxylamine succinate will knock most people out.

The only remotely interesting reason to wake up by 6:15 every day is to catch the tail end of the early evening news.

No caffeine or sugar within a few hours before you go to bed.

No TV, stimulating music, computer or video games within an hour and a half (or MORE!) of your bedtime.

Hard work.

Meditation.

Meditation.

Meditation.

Seems kinda silly to take drugs to overcome all of the thing you are doing wrong in your life.

usually skipping a night works for me. one time I was awake for 50 hours straight. that was certainly interesting, but something I would not want to try again voluntarily.

Sleep deprivation can be really intoxicating, after a certain point you don't even want to sleep anymore. Of course, by then you're a paranoid borderline-psychotic with severe hallucinations. It's pretty cool, everyone needs to try it. The longest I've ever gone without sleep is 5 days, but I can't remember most of day 4 or any of day 5. Though, I was told that during that time I was very entertaining (and a bit frightening).

do some coke or smoke some meth. It's easy to stay up long. I've only tried meth once. I HATED IT but wanted to do more at the same time. The come down was HORRIBLE. Depression, anxiety, and then the CRASH. I was glad I had a few xanax on me at the time.

Never again. That stuff is evil.

Nah, those types of drugs aren't my thing, I've seen too many people destroy their lives getting hooked on that nasty ****.

A couple weeks ago I saw a woman who was in her late 20s, but she could have easily passed for 50, I thought she looked familiar and then I found out she had been one of my sister's friends in high school. Her hair looked like it was coming out in clumps and all of her teeth were rotten or had fallen out. I'm often amazed and horrified that anyone could do that to themselves.

I tried having a few drinks last night, as drinking often makes me sleeping. It didn't quite work out so well. Made me a bit loopy. Maybe I shouldn't drink so much....

Anyways, it didn't help me sleep.

Get in the bed and start reading a chemistry textbook from start to finish (and this is from someone who loves chemistry). Even if it doesn't work, at least you'll learn something.

Drinking isn't really good for your sleep. If it was then drunks would be waking up feeling "rested". It only adds to the amount of sleep you need and often just ensures you are up at 3 or 4 in the morning.

Ok, I would expect someone who was 'drunk' to have a 'hangover.' Which I would guess probably wouldn't be so good for the old sleep patterns.

I went to the gym tonight. Hopefully that'll get me tired out.
