I've been trying to get some of my sites listed in dmoz for over 5 years now, and they still won't list them. It is so frustrating. So many sites use dmoz data, yet they have the attitude of 'we'll get to it when we get to it, if at all'. Its like the refuse to accept the responsibility they have as THE directory on the web. What's worse is, some of the sites are EXACTLY what they want. Frequently updated sites filled with hundreds of pages of almost completely unique information. (talking about the restaurant menu web site).
Sometimes they'll complain that they don't have very many editors. But on several occasions I've applied to be an editor. Only to never hear from them. I've also sent friendly emails to categories that do have editors, again to never hear back from them and never get listed. They have a whole page full of IP web sites. I've been trying to get mine listed in there for years and years, mines one of the very first 'IP' sites. I swear it's like I'm blacklisted or something. But thats not possible my IP changes usually at least once a year and each of my sites has it's own email address so I'd have to have been blocked 4 distinct specific times.
It really drives me crazy. They ignore my submission. They say they don't have enough help but they ignore my application to help them. The internet really would be a better place without this directory.

Never heard of them
I don't know about being "THE directory on the web." especially if no one uses them. At least no one I know uses them. google and yahoo seem to be more comprehensive.

He's talking about the Open Directory project. And I agree with you, having observed many of the same issues. The DMOZ can be important to new sites that haven't gotten a lot of search engine exposure.

but if no one is aware of it, how important is it? Does it feed google or something? Clearly the posts here show that its mostly unknown, and from the people I've already talked/asked that are somewhat tech savvy, they've not heard about it either.

The DMOZ is very important, and whether people know about it is irrelevant.
Search engines rely on getting data provided to them by other sources, in addition to their own. DMOZ provides a data feed into Google and many other search engines, and using DMOZ you can customize how you want your entry to read in Google, rather relying upon the first text that Google scrapes from your site.

Google doesn't even have a directory, their directory is actually just a mirror of dmoz.

Google should really create their own open directory, one that actually IS open. Yahoo has a directory but most of the categories require $200 to get listed. Everyone uses dmoz data though. Even my Random Website uses dmoz data.

I used to have my caving site listed under dmoz.org/Recreation/Outdoors/Speleology/Personal_Pages/ but they apparently ditched the whole speleology category. Whatever.
