For anyone who missed it on Slashdot, this guy made his own vacuum tubes. The video's about 17 minutes long, but man is it cool!

My friend's a licensed Ham radio operator and electronics engineer, he got a huge kick out of it.

Does the article describe if he does this as a profession or a hobby?

I wouldn't be surprised that he's been making these since his teenage years.

Nifty, I need to find someone like that who can hook me up with some custom tubes for my MC275.

He does it as a hobby. Someone who knows more French than me said that he's restoring a WWI short wave radio transceiver. The vacuum tubes he was making were from design schematics from an old WWI manual. Since the vacuum tubes made during the war weren't made with exacting engineering, they considered them "good enough" if they lasted 5 years. Very few radios manufactured during WWI had any working tubes 90 years later... (Is WWI right? Seems like it'd be WWII, just reiterating)

It looks like most of his tools were all hand-made, too. I tell ya, if you ever find yourself in a post apocalyptic world, he's the guy to have as your best friend.

It's great to see somebody so dedicated and skillful. (You know they still argue that those things give the best sound!)
