Thread about William Shatner AKA "The Shat."

Why are they remaking the new Star Trek movie without him?

Read in the LA Times today that this guy (Chris Pine) is replacing him and the LA Times denounced it:

If Shatner had been in the film I probably would have seen it, at leasted rented the DVD, but I have zero interest in any Star Trek movie without Shatner in it. Apparently Nimoy is in it, but the movie isn't the same without the two of them in it.

Will you watch the movie if they write The Hoff into it?

If it's not a remake then why use the same name?

It's called Star Trek and Nimoy is in it so they are obviously trying to connect the old series with the film.

Who cares if he's "old?"

Nimoy is in it. Not Shatner. Nimoy is "old" too. Old, aka "established" actors add gravitas to roles and thereby films.

"The Hoff?"

Yeah, I'll watch it. If they show live footage of him vomiting on the ground.

He's a has been. Shatner isn't.

That's not a remake. That's a prequel.

He's not in his 20s.

Personally, I think the dude had something to do with his last wife dying mysteriously in his swimming pool, but I like the fact that he ridicules himself. (Maybe he and Art Bell are BFF?)

There's a perfect casting opportunity here. Think about it: who could be possibly be more of a badass than James Tiberius Kirk? Why, his daddy of course! And what actor other than Bill Shatner could..... possibly..... do..... that..... role... justice?

That's how old James T. Kirk will be in these movies, yes.

most of the movie will likely revolve around the younger actors. I'm sure there's a younger version of Spock too.

I heard Shatner on the radio, briefly mention this, he didn't sound too angry, more interested in pushing his book.

Great idea - too bad you weren't the casting director.

Yeah, I dunno. I don't watch network tv anymore. I imagine its one of the best shows I'm not watching. I'll catch it when TNT buys the rights to syndication in 3 years.

I think inserting any of the original actors in the movie would be a cheap gimmick.

It's a time travel movie, very similar in plot (as far as I know) to the novel "The Entropy Effect".

My speculation is that an old Spock (Nimoy) will be telling the story of the early day of the Enterpise. Bruce Greenwood slated to play Fleet Captain Pike and hands the helm to Kirk.

This is Star Trek we 're talking about, the franchise that gave us time-traveling lizard nazis. No gimmick is too cheap!

William Shatner's Captain Kirk is dead, remember. He wanted to be written out and killed so he wouldn't have to do Kirk any more. So he got his wish, and now he's mad there's going to be Star Trek without him? Doesn't he already have enough money? Sour grapes, I say.
