So "a friend" has a boss that's 1 day away from being let go. Should he tell his boss?

With that little advance warning I don't see the point.

2 weeks? Maybe, if I liked him/her.
1 day? Nope.

Just act outraged and surprised when they tell you, take them to lunch and commiserate.

I actually like my two bosses very much. They would give me a heads up if it was coming down the pike and I would do the same for them. That's out of personal courtesy though, not professional courtesy.
1 day gives the boss plenty of time to commit some acts of sabotage that you could vicariously live through and laugh about later on. Of course if your soon to be former boss fingers you as the squealer and drags you under the bus you may be looking for a new job as well, so caution would be advised!
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

yah, the person wouldn't want to let the boss cause random acts of sabotage as the person would end up cleaning up the mess.

Do I like them? Did they hire me? Do I want them as a reference someday? Could I get in trouble for telling them?

I would say it depends on the situation, but in the end it's just business and even if he finds out you knew a day befrore, if he is a professional, he won't hold it against you. If he MIGHT get laid off due to some reason then I would tell them to straighten up, as I have done to a few co-workers. (They each wound up fired anyway).

If my boss was going to get fired and I knew about it I think he would know about it also...I mean when a new mayor is elected its pretty much a sad a guarantee he will lose his job. That my friends why politics suck.

I agree with iranfromthezoo.

You can really make life complicated for yourself by telling him. In a sense its not really your business.
If you tell him, and others find out that you told him. That would be bad for you.
If you tell him and he's not canned that would be bad for you.
etc.

Its a no win situation by telling him.

They told his underling because the underling will be taking over the bosses job and title.

Wow, that makes it even tougher. I think you're damned if you do or damned if you don't in that circumstance.

Obviously I have no real understanding of what it means to be a minion, but if you ask me I'd be spending the time planning how best to suck up to the new boss. Or plotting his overthrow. Or something.

Well, the situation my friend is in isn't much better. They didn't tell him on Tuesday when they said they would. They are now going to wait until NEXT Tuesday (as there are a number of people out of the office, and they don't want to cause problems with other people in the office). So only my friend, the CFO and the owner know.

The worst part is, my friend will be on vacation for the next two weeks and won't even be around to see his boss go.

Good thing he didn't tell him then. The boss would have come in pissed off & it would be ovbious who the snitch was. Getting on the bad side of the boss & the CFO isn't good.

That would have been an absolute nightmare. My friend probably would have lost his job! Ugh... what a horrible situation.

Then the answer is definitely NO. What possible benefit is there of telling him 1 day before he gets fired, especially considering he is talking over the position?

It would have been a nightmare for sure if he would have said something. He probably would have pissed off his boss, pissed off the CFO and President of the company, AND made his job nearly impossible if his boss would have thrown a wrench in the works...

Wow, I can't believe he even considere it!

Unfortunately, in the corporate world there are plenty of times when you learn something through back channels that it is in your best interests to keep secret, even if the information harms someone you like. In a situation like this, you need to ask yourself whether disclosing the information has any chance to change the outcome at all.

In this case, it sounds like the decision has already been made, and there's nothing that your friend can do to change it, so there's really no point in disclosing it early. And that turned out to be the correct decision, because if he did disclose it early, since the layoff got postoned it would just have complicated everything, and Corporate Muckety-Mucks don't like it when their lives get complicated for no good reason.
