Not a bad move at all. The body would have eventually been found. And with evidence of a break-in, the thief would have been at the top of the suspect list.
However, he could have gotten a better haul, then called it in from a payphone across town.

I don't really think calling a dead body in to the cops qualifies one as a "good samaritan".

It would have been even smarter if he'd stolen the body, he might have got over a thousand Euros for parts. I checked on this website last week, my own body would be worth around 2.5k. (Don't get any ideas, burglars!)
