I ordered a Mac Pro the day they were released and it still estimates that I will receive the machine around February 26th. Does anyone know why Apple is so slow and do you think it effects overall sales? I don't really mind the wait, but I can imagine many people may re-think about costs/delays and cancel their orders after a month or more of waiting. It would take anyone around 2 minutes to install the NVidida 8800 card so I know that can't be it... why are they so slow?

It is because they don't have them in stock.

Well I'm guessing that they don't have the 8800 on hand which is the main reason of the delays.

The 8800 drivers aren't done yet. 10.5.2 has to be released first.

Yep, there's a 5-7 week wait for the 8800 upgrade kit too.

Thanks for the quick responses, and even though I didn't realize that it was a software thing we're waiting on, that makes it seem even more ridiculous. Apple had to know months in advance what video card would ship with the next Mac Pros and the hardware for the 8800GT was finalized long before MacWorld. Drivers really should have been done long ago. The release drivers don't have to be perfect. 10.5 wasn't perfect, they just need to function, performance will improve over time.

Still writing/testing/fixing the drivers and/or card firmware. The card is 3 months old, but who knows when Apple/nVidia started on OS X drivers (should already be mostly covered by the 8600M GT driver from the MBP) and firmware (first EFI64 firmware for nVidia AFAIK).

And the tiny elves who install the cards get tired easily and need lots of breaks.
The era of anthropomorphizing hardware is over.

I thought it was the underpants gnomes that installed them?
