I have no idea what monitor brands are good and not. So far, the best I've seen in terms of specs and price are Dells.
I'm hoping that Apple updates and severely drops the price of their displays, but in case they don't, what are some good displays upwards of 22 inches with resolutions of 1920x1200 or higher? No other real requirements other than that about $500 is my ideal price.

The Dells not only have good specs and good price but they are also generally very high quality. I had a Dell 24" for several years before I sold it (as a package with my PowerMac G5 that I replaced with a 24" iMac), and it was a fantastic monitor. I've heard nothing but good things about them from others as well.

Samsung also makes some nice displays, but they're pricey (don't buy the cheap Samsungs!). I'd go with the Dell 2407WPF-HC.
edit: Not like Apple pricey, but like more-than-Dell pricey.

Wow, I was just checking out Dell's new Ultrasharp 30". 3000:1 contract ratio, 8ms response, 370cm/m2 brightness, and HDMI/DisplayPort/sweet port options, for $1750 right now? Dayum. By the time I'm ready to buy a monitor for my laptop, there's gonna be some bitchin' options....

Also, check Dell's small business store. They often have good deals there.

How does one validate their "small business?" I ask of course merely out of curiousity....

Is that what she said?
I like my Dell 2007 WFP a lot. It wakes from black a little slower than an Apple display, but not $400.00 slower.

Hmmmm. I looked in the "Small Business" section of dell.ca, and the prices seemed to be the same as in their "Home" section. Is there any other benefit to being a small business that I missed?
I do know some friends who own businesses, so if my oft-absent morals do get the best of me I could just purchase through them...

You can't buy a display on specs alone. What is the spec for color shift? (Hint: viewing angle is not it)
That said, some of Dell's higher priced displays are ok, but Apple's displays are well worth their price too.

"Ok?" I've never heard of anyone who didn't think Dell's LCDs are among the best out there. In fact, I've also never heard of anyone who didn't think Apple's displays were overpriced; they're just willing to pay the premium for the name and the look.
You mind finding the "spec for colour shift?" I don't see that criteria listed anywhere. How does it differ between the two?

You don't need to be a small business at all. You just order from the small business store and they send it to you. The normal prices are they same, but they often have very good sales that are specifically in the small business store.

Apple's displays (at least used to) use the exact same components as the Dell displays...

...and cost significantly more.
For me, matching that nice shade of aluminum isn't "well worth the price"...

I would gladly pay $100 just for the Apple aesthetic. Unfortunately, they are way more than $100 pricier than the competition.

Viewsonic makes some great, cheap displays.

I have a cheap Samsung ($500), and I love it. Not the best screen if you’re a photography studio or some other kind of pro who needs perfect gamut and all—but a pretty damn good monitor for regular home use, if you ask me. And no more expensive than a Dell monitor, either (but a lot easier on the eyes, design-wise).

The OP wanted 1920x1200, not 1680x1050... the comparable Dells to that Samsung are under $300 every day and under $250 with a coupon.

I’d missed the 1920x1200 part.
And not over here, they’re not. The cheapest 22” Dell I can find (also 1680x1050) is about $35 cheaper than the Samsung was.
