I'm fairly certain that there is an oldie that has these lyrics: "like the deserts miss the rain". The problem is that these same lyrics have been used in many many other songs since. Searching google so far revealed the song titles "Missing" and "And I Miss You", but all seem to be by the wrong artist. Does anyone remember who did the oldie and what the title of the song was?

Greatly appreciated!

Hmm... these are the right lyrics, but I'm pretty sure it's not the version that I'm thinking of. I think it's a male singer in the version that I'm thinking of (although I could be wrong...).

"Like the flowers need the rain..."? "I Need You" by America

"'Jelly Hat' sounds silly," I told Prince. "How about something poetic, like 'Raspberry Beret.'"

Nope, definitely not it, I'm certain that the lyrics are "like the deserts miss the rain".

"Missing" by Everything But the Girl. Great song, even if it is kinda pop-ish.

The Todd Terry remix is the version that’s well-known. That could be why itistoday remembers it as a male singer?

Or because Tracy Thorne kind of looks (and sounds, perhaps even) a bit like a guy?

Tracey Thorn is the voice of Everything but the girl.

Has been for over 25 years.

If it's not Tracey Thorn, it ain't EBTG.

EBTGs "Missing" has been covered by No Mercy in 1995. This latin-house-flavoured version is probably the one you're looking for.

EBTG is considered an "oldie".

Thriller was released 25 years ago today.

I am an oldie. Sigh.

I know what you mean. But there are different levels of "oldies." Want to confuse a 25 year old? Ask 'em about something that came out around the time of Thriller, like Juice Newton's "Break it to Me Gently" or 38 Special's "Caught Up In You". Want to confuse a 15 year old? Ask about EBTG.

My nephew once (several years ago) told his dad that he'd "discovered" this "great band." "What's it called?" "Black Sabbath." Sigh. My son discovered a cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" and played it for me. When I told him that Guns N' Roses had done a good job with it, he looked at me kind of like a monkey doing a math problem. When I pointed him to Mick and his mates, I earned zillions of cool points.

Considering there’s only one by Guns N’ Roses in that list, I’d assume that one.

Yep. Axl does a great job on it. He's not Mick, but he tries hard.

I didn't read that well enough. I thought G'n'Rs version was offered as an alternative to whatever the nephew presented

Oh and it was my SON who noticed Sympathy for the Devil. My NEPHEW noticed Black Sabbath... I don't think I could have kept my composure if my son had "discovered" Black Sabbath. He'd have been very confused about why I was rolling on the floor, laughing hysterically.
