I still owe on my car. I was going to sell it and be able to break somewhat even until my girlfriend made the aquentince of a curb. The damage was only cosmetic and needs the bumper replace, roughly $700 - $1000. I'm belly up in my loan a little bit, which wouldn't have been a problem until the damage.

So now, I really don't want it anymore and need to figure out a way to get rid of it with be able to at least come close to paying off the loan. Any suggestions?
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Sell it privately person-to-person. Try craigslist or the paper. It can be annoying, but it will get you the most money.

Bumpers are only 700 to 1000 if you buy the OEM. Buy a chinese copy, and have it painted for 75 bucks. total cost to you? probably 300.

Worth the money you get to sell the car for with the replaced bumper than with the damaged one.

If you only owe $1000-2000 just keep it and pay it off. No reason to get into even more debt just because you don't want to fix the bumper and you "really don't want it anymore."

OK, let's say you owe 1000, and it's worth 2000, then you win right? Really, it's hard to answer w/o details.

You're not "belly up" on the loan. You are "upside-down".

Belly-up means bankrupt.

Oops, you are correct sir.

I owe around $11k, at best the car is worth $9.5.

I'm tired of it. The payments, the gas, the parking tickets. I'd rather get a motor cycle or something more fuel economic. I was sold the car with the understanding that it would get between 30 - 35 mpg, and the highest I have ever seen is 27.

Aren't parking tickets your fault, not the cars? I thought you said you owed between $1k and $2k, not $11k.

Oh, you would still owe 1.5 once you had sold the car... Well, honestly, this isn't going to help you, but my advice is to never buy a car on credit.

That is not going to occur in this day and age. Most people including myself can only afford a car on credit. I don't just mean new either.

Fix the damn car and pay until you are ahead of the loan. Suck it up. Otherwise it will continue to bite you in the arse. Trust me. get ahead now or it will be a perpetual effect.

I do not think saving $6000 is an unreasonable goal for anybody but the truly destitute. And if you can't do that, I don't see how you'll pay off the car anyway.

My first car cost less than 1500, my current one less than 6000 - I have never borrowed money to buy a car - and I am not unusually wealthy. Buying an 11k+ car on credit is not unavoidable.

I know it's an extreme suggestion, but you can usually get more money for an older car if you sell it off in parts. Gear box has a certain value, engine has a certain value, seats, wheels, and so on.

My girlfriend has a tendency to get them, however, the registration is in my name.

True.

That is probably my only option.

It can be when you are a student who doesn't have their parents paying for college.

True, but it is not easily attainable for just anyone.

The car is a 2005, it would be a shame to consider parting it out.

"True, but it is not easily attainable for just anyone."
Not to belabor the point, but if you can't afford $1500, HTF are you going to afford the payments on an $11k+ car? If you can't afford a car, you certainly can't afford the interest on the car you can't afford...

You really don't know my situation and to say that if I can afford a car payment means I can afford to say 6 grand for a car is arrogant at best. Let me guess you still live with you parents, don't have kids, a mortgage or other financial responsibilities..

I'd rather not have car payments and I generally keep my cars long enough to get out from underneath them. Being able to have a car payment doesn't easily equate to the ease of saving up and buying in cash.

I actually meant about the 11k part. $1500 isn't so bad. I actually had close to $15k saved after four years, but my father died and I have to pay all of the funeral expenses. That was less than two years ago, and I haven't financially recovered since I began going to college as well.

While they're earning and saving said $6000, do you plan on personally giving them a ride to work every day? That's awful nice of you/.

Sounds like a great plan for someone who works somewhere there's accessible public transportation. Not so much otherwise.
