Meh. They spent half the trailer showing clips from the previous movies.

I was thinking this is gonna be really fun seeing another Indiana Jones movie. I love the series. Then I noticed that Cate Blanchett will be in the movie. Oh dear gods this will be the best one yet.

Not too excited by the trailer. I mean, come on - he makes a comment before punching the bad guys out of the vehicle?

Spielberg doesn't bat a thousand and neither does Lucas (far from it actually), so I will reserve judgement until I see it.

Of course I'll see it, was there ever any question? This is Indiana Jones!
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Very cool looking! Any clues about the timeline on this one? Have they moved Indy into the 1950's sometime?

I believe it has advanced in quasi-real time- so like 20 years later- last one came out in 1989 I think- so yeah- 50's.

It has to occur before 1959 since a 48 star flag is shown in the teaser.

Close-ups if the US flag (any version) makes me cringe and automatically lowers my opinion of that movie - unless it serves a sarcastic purpose. Then it can be forgiven.

To be fair, the Indiana Jones movies have always been proudly positioned as B movies with good production values. There has always been a healthy serving of cheese with these films and it's worked.

American flags are shown in countless movies. Sometimes as a sign of patriotism (within the context of the film), sometimes to provide a visual cue to spacial setting (zooming to a flag flying over a military tent, then panning down to the tent, for example), and others to cue to temporal setting (e.g., the Union flag vs Confederate in a documentary or civil war film; 48 stars on the flag in this trailer, etc.)

I'm not seeing the "rare exceptions" or any indications that it's cheesy.

But I am open to examples and statistics to back it up.

True, but I wasn't generalizing. I was stating my opinion on cinema. To have an opinion on close-ups of the US flag in cinema is as strange as having an opinion about car chases in cinema.

It happens a lot.

I think it is cheezy, you don't.. fine by me.

Another example: All movies that contain one of the Gyllenhaal brats are autmatically demoted by me as well. I think they can't act their way out of a wet paper bag..

I have no statistics, but examples are: all movies they've been in.

Yeah, but you have to admit, Ronin has the best car chase scene EVER.

Consider the utility of what is called an "establishing shot." These are usually done to show where the upcoming scenes are set, but by using a particularly time-centered item like a 48-star U.S. flag, the shot can do more and show WHEN as well.

But as for worrying about all the details being accurate for a specific time in an Indy movie, please note that in the first one, set in 1936, they showed the Pan Am Clipper flying over the Golden Gate bridge (which was not completed until 1937) and the Nazis used MP38 (and sometimes MP40) sub-machine guns which were introduced in 1938 and 1940 respectively. Oh, and the German "flying wing" airplane wasn't what you'd call "historically accurate" either. It was great fun, but not history. "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" was produced with significantly better attention to historical detail and accuracy, but the theatrical films are intended for fun, not history lessons.

In my experience, movies that use the US flag in an establishing shot, aren't very original and tend to take them far more seriously than they deserve.

Much like all movies that have David Warner somehow end up as flops and/or really really bad.

Yeah I'm a huge Packers fan and watch the NFL and spread gospel of the all-American sport to the otherwise soccer-uber-alles crowds over here --- with some success I might add!

Farvre is just so cool and Driver, Bigby, Kampman, Bush, Woodson and all the rest.. darn it's so long until next season.

I could but then I'd be criticized for having a Pollyanna syndrome..

(btw I have nothing against the US! I prefer Apple products, NFL, thanksgiving-style turkey, American trucks and Hollwood movies -- hello?!?)

It certainly doesn't sound like you like the U.S. from the way you're posting. Who'd call you a Pollyanna, anyway?

I disagree with you on a lot of things you've said, but that's not the point. The attitude that comes across lately isn't the same as what I think of as your normal attitude; you're usually not 100% negative all day long...

I am not sure I understand the second paragraph of your post. Could you explain?

As for the first paragraph, I disagree. If I wouldn't like the US, then I'd say I didn't like the US. However I've clearly written that I do like the US -- so I'd say from the way I'm posting it sounds like I like the US.

Also I think you are interpreting criticism as negativity. We're talking about movies here not the US in particular.

Did anyone notice the box with the label "Roswell, New Mexico" on it?

Plus the pair of glasses on the box that are smashed look suspiciously like the ones a certain Jones Snr. would wear...

I'm looking forward to it. I like sci-fi and adventure movies immensely, even the B-rated ones. The Indiana Jones series is one of my favorites of all time.

Indy will be noticeably older, but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it.
