So the wife and I found ourselves in Best Buy the other day, on a completely unrelated errand. I told her, lets take a look at the Blu-ray dvd players now thwt the hi-def wars of blu-ray vs. HD dvd are over.
Talk about sticker shock 400 bucks for a sony blu-ray player.  That's about half of what I paid for my TV. I was expecting maybe a 120 or something.
Outrageous, so it looks like I'll have wait a little longer before I take the plunge. Maybe by next Christmas the price will come down to a little more realistic level.

Yeah, we discussed the best valued Blu-ray players in the Official Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD thread here. Might be worth a look.
(PS3 is a really good player, but uber expensive)

Yeah, except I'm not discussing blu-ray vs. HD.
This thread is about the price of Blu-Ray.
Perhaps we only need only a couple of threads here at NN then, one thread for mac desktops, one for laptops and one for lounge stuff.

You didn't say anything, and usually people who just post a link, like that infer that I'm I should be posting there and not in a new thread.
If you wanted me to read some of that, you would have created less confusion by adding some text to your post instead of just a link

What's the point of this thread? Everyone knows Blu-ray players are expensive. This is like starting a new thread titled "The Sky is Blue". First post:
So the wife and I found ourselves outside the other day. I told her, lets take a look at the sky now that the cloudy days are over.
Talk about shock, the sky is BLUE. I was expecting maybe pink or purple or something.

But about Blu-ray players... They are about 2x the price the average consumer is willing to pay right now. I'm just glad I was able to pick up my Sony BDP-S300 for $269.00 + 5 free movies around the holidays. Now they go for $399.00 and no free movies

I think someone is giving me a PS3 soon, but otherwise I won't be buying a blu-ray player until they are under ~$150 or a large number of movies I want to watch are not released on DVD.

I predict Xmas 2008 to be a great time to buy a blu-ray player. But each year they will get cheaper, although not as cheap as DVD.

The ironic thing is, until this thread I had no idea that the PS3 and blu-ray players were nearly the same price. I could almost make a case for a PS3. 
You're correct, I believe by Christmas time, we'll see the price come down some

just now bought a sony blu ray player, s301, off ebay - i already have a ps3 in my computer room so i couldnt justify buying another one. this will be great for my living room.
i think i got a good deal - $270 shipped

I'd consider a name brand Blu-ray 1.1 player for $250 (esp. if it came with some free movies), although I've been saying all along the magic price point for me is ~$200.
$399 = no sale, and I'm not interested in the PS3 either.
Also, Profile 1.0 = no sale.
As for AppleTV, maybe when it's $99... just so I can hack it.

? Did you sell your Mac mini or what? Last time you posted a pic of your home theatre system there was a Mac mini hooked up to it.
Which reminds me, I'd consider getting a Mac mini for the projector, but I don't feel like paying inflated prices for one in Canada, especially if there's no HDCP support.
P.S. DivX certified DVD players cost about 50 bucks.
