will this take all my inputs and upconvert them out of one cable to my tv? Will it only upconvert to component not hdmi? I just want one simple connection to my tv so I can simplify my life. Some sites say it can some say it's misleading.

As a general rule most AVR's like this one will only upconvert to HDMI. If you have that on your TV you should be good.

If you are also looking at a blu-ray player you might want to check if that receiver will do any decoding of the loss-less formats. For example there are no players right now that will decode DTS-HD-MA for instance but some of them will send the bitstream data to the receiver instead. But keep in mind that it takes a good stereo with good speakers to hear the difference (and that is even up for debate).

That looks not to be the case with this particular unit. The HDMI on it is a simple 2/1 switch, and it doesn't even pull the audio off of the HDMI input for sources plugged into the AVR. You'd still have to use a separate optical cable. The only reason this AVR appears to have HDMI is to taunt you.

From customer reviews:
I bout this thinking that it converted audio/video with the HDMI cable, I was wrong. You are going to have to get optical cables to get the sound. it's not a big deal but when you have your HD/Blue ray hooked up with the optical you have to select Opt 1,instead of click DVD etc. that is just a little pet peav of mine. I mean everything works but I want to hit the buttons that are there for that source etc. not Opt 1 or Opt 2 etc. I have had this now for 2 months and it works good. I have been extremely busy and haven't configured the audio, that it says it can do, it works perfectly fine for me now.

I read that as well. If this is true then this receiver will never be compatible with the loss-less codecs from a blu-ray player. Not a big surprise considering the price. You can not pass these codecs via optical cable. Not enough bandwidth.

I think you would be safer to look for a newer receiver with HDMI 1.3 compatible inputs. That solves most of the these issues.

Edit to add: The Onkyo TX- SR605 may be more future proof. But it is more expensive.

this may not be something you, or most, want to hear...but letting your A/V receiver do HDMI switching isn't a good idea; most don't do it correctly or have the bandwidth.

if your TV has enough HDMI inputs, send each source there and use the toslink or coax audio out to your receiver for audio decoding/processing; it won't do lossless, but you will have the best picture. your TV is designed to do video; the receiver is just switching the signal from one to another. if your TV doesn't have enough ports, look into an external HDMI switching box that supports 1.3 already or that is upgradeable with firmware. most good HDMI switching will handle full 1080p with lossless audio. i realize it is "one more" thing in the A/V rack but most mid to even high end receivers don't do a good job of HDMI switching specially with multiple HD sources (blu-ray, HD sat/cable, etc).

HDMi is still a mess. The first cable boxes were notorious for being out of spec and having handshake problems with various TV's and receivers. You are right that many times it is a major problem to and anything between the source and the TV.

I have had no issues with my preamp (Anthem). But then it is arguably the best available at up-scalling any source to 1080p over HDMI.

Don't forget your VGA DVI HDMI HDCP and other acronyms you'll have to upgrade to every few years.

$399 should be the big clue. AVR with HDMI 1.3 are $$$$
